In my own research, and the work my team here at ABSTRACT has done on the subject, we’ve found there are five key pillars to modern day resilience: Situational awareness. This is about knowing that every situation is different, and what happens in one situation does not mean it will happen in others.
Situational awareness is followed by Mindfulness, which is about how you take time out to allow your brains to reset, recover and go again.
Self-care is another pillar, before a plane takes off, and you go through the emergency drill, whose oxygen mask are you told to put on first, yes, your own, so make sure you look after yourself.
Positive relationships are important for building resilience, is your glass half-full or half-empty, this might be determined by the people you listen to.
Purpose is also a key pillar, why do you do what you do, if you have a strong purpose, it will go a long, long way to ensuring you’re adaptable and resilient when roadblocks are thrown in your path.

The five pillars of resilience are crucial, but in the coming weeks we will focus on developing self-awareness, self-care and mindfulness practice in our Wellbeing sessions. Over the coming weeks, Blocks 3-5 will be focusing on practising the five pillars of resilience. The five pillars of resilience include fostering healthy emotional and mental health strategies for life, learning to manage the uncomfortable and struggles in life, mindfulness practice, and connection and support. Additional strategies for fostering resilience discussed in our Wellbeing lessons have included the importance of keeping routines going – including 9-10 hours of sleep, meal times, exercise, play, cognitively stimulating activities, work and relaxation – so that days have rhythm and structure and are not spent inactive.

The 5 Pillars of Resilience is a scientifically validated, evidence-based model for understanding resilience. It is a holistic framework that includes the physical, emotional, social and mental aspects of resilience. Pillar 1 – Energy is about sustaining and renewing physical energy. Pillar 2 – Future Focus is all about knowing where you want to go and how to get there. Pillar 3 – Inner Drive is about self-belief, confidence and motivation. Pillar 4 – Flexible Thinking helps us think outside the box and identify new ideas and possibilities. Pillar 5 – Strong Relationships is about having positive relationships and great support networks through their friends, family, and colleagues. Energy is the foundation stone for resilience. Future Focus is about ensuring that you are not stuck in the problems of the present and that you are looking forward with realistic optimism. Inner Drive is about motivation, confidence and self-belief. Flexible Thinking enables you to have lots of different options and routes to get you there, and Strong Relationships ensure you have the support you need along the way.

The five pillars which help us to be Resilient in our life, our work, and in every aspect of our being are presented as key components.
Self-Care is by far the most important of the five pillars.
Self-awareness is about being aware of yourself as a person, who you are, how you portray yourself, and your belief systems.
Positive Relationships surround yourself with people who support you and encourage you to be the best version of yourself.
Mindfulness is about being mindful of what is going on around us.
Purpose recognising our purpose means realising that we serve something bigger than ourselves.

Become self-aware, one of the most important parts of my message as a career coach is that folks need to do the deep work with themselves, look in the mirror, and take an accurate self-inventory. Be honest with yourself about what's working and what's not. Be mindful, I see being mindful in the workplace as the practice of looking at things that happen and finding the lessons you can learn from them. Practice self-care, 2020 really taught me how important it is to take care of myself, and I'm not just talking about skincare and bubble baths, I am talking about taking time for myself and building margin into my day to let myself breathe and give myself some grace. Have purpose, you have to have a why in your life, my "why" isn't a line on a business card, it's my vision of my long-term goals for my working life. Cultivate positive relationships, having relationships with people who support and motivate you is so helpful in building a resilient life.

My framework of Everyday Resiliency is made up of five core competencies that support people’s capacity for resiliency. These five interconnected pillars establish our baseline for navigating stress, challenge, change, uncertainty, and all the things we must carry in life. They are: Belonging, Perspective, Acceptance, Hope, and Humour. Life will inevitably present us with challenges, and these five pillars—Belonging, Perspective, Acceptance, Hope, and Humour—are how we can build our capacity for resiliency and show up in the hard parts of our lives. Belonging is the most important thing for people to feel, whether it’s within a family system, organization, or company, a sense of community is essential. Perspective is having this beautiful alignment between our head and our heart to be able to make what matters most, matter most. Acceptance is about deciphering what is within our control and what is outside of it, and involves making a daily decision to co-exist with the things beyond our control. Hope is holding this deep trust that better days are ahead, and is more than optimism, it is believing in our ability to excel. Humour is the capacity to recognize and appreciate moments of joy, wonder, and merriment, even in the most difficult of situations and seasons.
