The 4 C’s are as follows: Control – Control means having a sense of self-worth and describes the extent to which a person feels in control of their life and their circumstances. Commitment – Commitment is about goal orientation and ‘stickability’ and describes the extent to which someone is prepared to set goals and make measurable promises that, once made, they will work hard to deliver on. Challenge – Challenge describes the extent to which the individual will push back their boundaries, embrace change and accept risk. Confidence – Confidence completes the picture and describes the self-belief an individual has in their own abilities and the interpersonal confidence they possess to influence others and deal with conflict and challenge. The cornerstones of the MTQ48 measure are the 4 C’s of Control, Commitment, Challenge and Confidence.

The “4Cs model” of mental toughness was developed by my colleagues and I, and is the most widely used model for defining and measuring mental toughness.
It comprises four components: confidence, control, commitment and challenge.
The 4Cs model is a positive psychological variable related to success, with psychologically beneficial properties that extend beyond accepting and dealing with anxiety, to finding opportunities for self-development and growth.
The key difference is a focus not on simply battening down the hatches in the face of emotional storms, but of feeling capable of seeking out demanding environments and prospering in them.
Mental toughness in this sense is a positive psychological variable related to success, with psychologically beneficial properties that extend beyond accepting and dealing with anxiety, to finding opportunities for self-development and growth.
The opposite of toughness in the 4Cs model is not weakness, but sensitivity.
Sensitive individuals find stresses difficult to handle, but they have a unique and interesting view of the world which adds to the diversity of debate and discussion.

Peter Clough’s model of the 4 Cs provides an effective framework for schools and teachers to support their learners. It consists of four attributes that help learners to develop mental toughness – challenge, control, commitment and confidence. The 4Cs provides children with an effective toolkit which supports them to develop a healthy self-esteem and enables them to be more effective learners. Learners should be encouraged to look differently at a situation or challenge by exploring them through the lens of the 4Cs. With younger learners you can put your 4C glasses on and older learners can analyse a scenario against the 4 Cs.

One simple way to think about laying the foundation for strong, resilient, emotionally healthy kids is the “Four C’s”: Connection, Courage, Consistency, Comfort.
Connection: Children need to feel embodied connection with others— primarily, with their adult caregivers, and secondarily, with peers.
Courage: Everyone feels nervous sometimes, but the emotionally healthiest kids have courage enough to tackle new challenges and difficult situations despite normal nerves.
Consistency: Just as you probably feel unsettled or anxious when parts of your life lack consistency— between jobs, moving to a new place, loss of a consistent relationship, new structure to your days— children need a foundation of consistency to develop an emotionally balanced and resilient relationship with their world.
Comfort: The counterpart to courage, above, is a healthy dose of comfort when comfort is needed.
