Maintaining our peace in such a chaotic world can be a challenge, but it is possible and can be done in different ways to best benefit us and our mental health. Protect your space. Find a space in your home where you feel safe, and allow yourself to feel your feelings and be calm in this space. Confide in your people. If your safe space is a person, you may find comfort in knowing that person is there to listen without judgement. Practice self-care! Make sure that every single day you have some time carved out solely focused on meeting your needs. Catching up on your favorite show, treating yourself to your favorite food, or even doing a puzzle are all examples of self-care. Take time for you. Whether you take a hike, journal, meditate, or listen to your favorite podcast, finding pockets of peace throughout the day is key. Learn to say no firmly, but kindly. If you are feeling overwhelmed with different aspects of life, consider taking a walk or calling a friend. Do whatever works best for you in that moment, but try to avoid excessive consumption of substances and screen time.

Refuse to inherit dysfunction, learn new ways of living instead of repeating what you lived through. It’s a process for sure for many of us, but not an impossible one. Once we gain greater self-awareness and realize we do not have to engage in abusive or chaotic relationships, we are ready to accept stability. When we begin to love ourselves and put in the work to get to know ourselves, we start to recover and heal. In order to accept and attract stability into your life, it must first come from within. When you continually pour love into yourself and work to understand how your past has shaped you, you’re in a better position to create a brighter future. I’m finally beginning to accept the love I give to myself and the love from others. Our brains are powerful enough to be trained, and we can always learn new ways as humans.

Recognizing the cycle of chaos is the first step toward healing. It’s essential to realize that familiarity doesn’t always equate to health. Self-Reflection: Take the time to reflect on your past experiences and how they shape your present. Emotional Awareness: Begin to identify your emotions and their sources. Set Boundaries: Establish healthy boundaries in your relationships. Seek Support: Consider reaching out to a therapist or joining a support group. Embrace Calmness: Introduce peaceful practices into your daily life. Try yoga, meditation, or spending time in nature to help your mind acclimate to tranquility and reduce stress. Celebrate Your Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem.

Seeking help from a qualified counselor to help you in your journey toward healing is one of the positive steps you can take to move forward. Seeing a counseling professional can help undo years of negative thinking, coping, etc. A therapist can provide a safe and non-judgmental environment to work through your emotions. It’s often not until they reach adulthood that they begin to realize they experienced a chaotic childhood, and once this realization occurs, it can be confusing to navigate. You may have many suppressed memories, which are best discussed in a safe and monitored environment. The memories need to be explored and processed, but you may not feel comfortable sharing with family or friends. Developing positive skills is also essential, such as reading, journaling, hiking, taking a walk, exercising, pampering yourself, watching your favorite movie, listening to your favorite musician, or engaging in creative expression. Let your friends, trusted family members, partner, or spouse know what you’re going through, as having a supportive team of people by your side will make your healing process a lot more bearable. Learning to silence your inner critic is empowering once you realize the things you have been believing about yourself are simply not true. You can learn to replace the inner critical thoughts with valid and positive affirmations when you begin to be aware of a pattern of self-criticism.

To heal from chaotic environments, recognizing this cycle is the first step toward breaking free. It's crucial to understand that familiarity does not necessarily mean health. Self-Reflection: Take time to think about your feelings and experiences. Writing in a journal can help you uncover patterns and realize what triggers your attraction to chaos. Emotional Awareness: Work on identifying your emotions and where they come from. Ask yourself: Are you craving drama? What feelings are you trying to escape? Understanding these connections is key to reducing the urge to seek chaos. Set Boundaries: Don’t hesitate to create boundaries in your relationships. Healthy communication can lead to more stable interactions, allowing for meaningful connections without feeling overwhelmed. Seek Support: Consider talking to a therapist or joining a support group. Embrace Calmness: Gradually introduce peaceful activities into your life. Try meditation, yoga, or spending time in nature to help your mind learn to enjoy tranquility. Celebrate Your Progress: Recognize and celebrate every step you take toward healing.
