Train Operators may often designate certain coaches in First or Standard as a Quiet Coach. Train Operators restrictions and coaches used will vary but as a rule they ask that electronic equipment is used in silent mode and that all mobile telephone conversations are made in the vestibules at the ends of the coach.

Please try to keep the noise to a minimum, the train conductors murmur over the intercom. A crying baby, listen, nobody wants to make a new parent’s life any harder. A coachload of Liverpool fans, we’ve all got our own comfort level with confrontation. But if it’s some Zoom call bants, I promise, I will be the first person there with an extremely British: Er, I don’t know if you noticed the sign. Disapproving glances are déclassé, audible tuts stopped working in the 90s, and deliberate coughs went out of fashion with Covid.

In the Quieter coach, the noise should be kept down. Music through headphones should be kept quiet enough as to not disturb other customers and conversations should be conducted quietly.

The Quiet Zone is normally in Coach M. The rules are No phone calls, Use all electrical equipment in silent mode, Headphones should be at low volume so the noise can't be heard by others, Conversations with fellow passengers should be quiet and with consideration for others. Please be aware of the noise you are contributing and respect the space. Anyone not observing the rules may be asked to stop or move to a different carriage. Please note, as a public space, this is a quiet zone rather than a silent zone. Whilst we will make effort to monitor and address issues of persistent noise, quiet conversation or ambient noise can't be completely eliminated. Additionally, on-train announcements are still required to play. Therefore, if you're particularly sensitive to noise, we recommend travelling with noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs.
