In these areas, phone calls, ringtones, loud music, including through headphones, and other loud activities are not welcome. It's not a silent zone and you shouldn't be surprised if passengers travelling together talk to each other, but it is a quiet zone and they should make an effort to keep their voices down while doing so. In principle, people shouldn't be making phone calls or having loud conversations in the Ruhebereich. If other passengers are being noisy, you'd be well within your rights to point out where they are and ask them to adjust their volume/location.

Conversations with fellow passengers should be quiet and with consideration for others. Please be aware of the noise you are contributing and respect the space. No phone calls. Headphones should be at low volume so the noise can't be heard by others. Please note, as a public space, this is a quiet zone rather than a silent zone. Whilst we will make effort to monitor and address issues of persistent noise, quiet conversation or ambient noise can't be completely eliminated.

In the Quiet Zone, remain silent, in exceptional situations you can communicate in a whisper. The following activities are defined as undesirable in the Quiet Zone: mobile phone calls, ring tones, listening to loud music and other activities involving noise generation that may cause discomfort to other travellers in this zone. Do not talk on the phone, turn off sound in your telephone, tablet or laptop, listen to music quietly and only using earphones. The Quiet Zone is a separate area on a train, designated for passengers who need silence and who respect that others also want to travel in peace and quiet.

I work hard all day and I sit in the quiet zone for a reason, usually trying to read. Do you not hear the 3+ announcements per ride saying that it’s in effect? Or can you not read the 100 signs saying it’s the quiet zone? Do you hear ANYONE ELSE talking? Atleast once a day I hear people taking phone calls and not even lowering their voices, people having asinine meaningless conversations and laughing, and my personal favourite people watching stuff on their phone full volume no headphones.
