So you already know a bit about stealth walking, but you’re looking to take your ability to walk quietly to the next level. Hopefully if you’re reading this you already know at least a basic amount about stealth walking. If you don’t I recommend you pause here and learn some basics first. You can get started reading my post “Stealth Walking 101”. This technique assumes you are already using a basic stealth walking stance/gait. I recommend the “Yoko Aruki” in many cases, though a traditional forward stance is also appropriate much of the time. Stealth walking is about walking quietly, and one of the challenges is walking over creaky floorboards, which is exceptionally difficult to do this quietly. You will find that you struggle to keep the boards from flexing and making horrible sounds. Depending on the ‘creakiness’ of those boards, the sounds may carry quite far from you with every step. To combat this I have developed a secret stealth walking technique worthy of a ninja.

Maintain balance control by allowing your body weight to sink and be carried by deeply flexed knees. Use all joints for movement, emphasizing fluidity through the engagement of the ankles, knees, and hips for stepping. Maintain your weight and balance on your grounded leg while you move the other leg into position to bear the weight. When absolute silence is a must, avoid distributing your weight over both legs at the same time. Progress SLOWLY with small steps, but most importantly, body weight is placed on the outside EDGE of the advancing foot and then the foot is rotated in slowly inward testing the ground under foot until about half your body weight is on the ball of the foot. Wait and LISTEN -- when there is covering noise, such as wind or bird or small animal movement, use their sound in the leaves to mask your own. Be as patient as possible. If speed of travel is not important, take as much time as you can. Impatience and the resultant hasty movement that it encourages are the greatest dangers to the person who must move silently without detection. Keep your movement appropriate to your surroundings. Top speed with this stalking is about 500 yards in two hours - but you will be amazed at the animals and surrounding detail in the forest that you will begin to see.
