Habit reversal training is a behavioral therapy that helps you eliminate unwanted behaviors by replacing them with other actions. Competing response training is the second step of HRT, it involves learning to do a behavior that physically prevents the completion of the habit. The replacement behavior should make it difficult or impossible to do the unwanted behavior, be possible to do for at least one minute, be an otherwise “normal” behavior that blends in with ongoing activities, and be possible to do anywhere without the need of a particular object. If you’re trying to replace nail biting, for example, you could clench your hands into a fist and hold them at your side, fold your hands together, sit on your hands, or fold your arms in front of you. Awareness training is also part of HRT, it involves making you more aware of when you’re doing the unwanted behavior. Relaxation training may also be part of HRT, it helps you use various strategies to minimize your stress level, like deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation, which can help reduce the frequency of wanting to do the unwanted behavior. Generalization training involves practicing the competing behavior in various situations and environments, so it'll eventually become automatic and replace the habit. Habit reversal training can help treat several unwanted habits, mainly body-focused repetitive behaviors, in both children and adults, such as hair twirling, nail biting, nose picking, social smoking, and thumb sucking.
