Some places and situations present specific risks and triggers for people, for example being alone at home late at night with internet access. These can become more risky if combined with risky thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and can provide the beginning of a chain of unhealthy behaviour. That’s why it is so important to recognise what your triggers are, and situations and environments that are risky for you.

There are three types of triggers: external, internal, and synthetic. External Triggers — Triggers All Around, when most people think of triggers, then think of external triggers. The sight of a TV remote, the sound of police sirens, or the smell of fresh baked cookies are all external triggers. Internal Triggers — Triggers in Your Head, are things that users sense inside their selves, their feelings or thoughts, these can be things like hunger, remembering that your favorite bakery is nearby, boredom, thinking about the taste of cinnamon, anxiety, thinking of someone you used to go out drinking with. Synthetic Triggers — Triggers Made by You, are triggers that have been intentionally constructed by you, the Behavior Designer, to trigger a particular behavior.

Internal Triggers come from within the person, it can be a memory, a physical sensation, or an emotion, such as an emotional response to an abusive partner. Other common internal triggers include: Anger Anxiety Feeling overwhelmed, vulnerable, abandoned, or out of control Loneliness Muscle tension Memories tied to a traumatic event Pain Sadness. External Triggers come from the person's environment, they can be a person, place, or a specific situation. What may be a normal, everyday situation or minor inconvenience for some may be triggering to someone living with mental illness. For example, a person living with trauma may be triggered by: A movie, television show, or news article that reminds them of the experience A person connected to the experience Arguing with a friend, spouse, or partner A specific time of day Certain sounds that remind them of the experience Changes to relationships or ending a relationship Significant dates such as holidays or anniversaries Going to a specific location that reminds them of the experience Smells associated with the experience, such as smoke. There are also situational triggers, however this text does not describe them in detail.

There are certain things we are exposed to that bring out particular behaviours. These conditioned stimuli can be positive or they can also be negative stimuli that bring about a different response. Triggers are a call-to-action, they are cues, signals, or nudges that motivate us to do something or exhibit a behaviour. According to Stanford professor BJ Fogg, there are three types of external triggers. The three types are Spark, Facilitator, and Signal. Spark: The spark trigger motivates you to act. Facilitator: This trigger works with complicated things like dealing with trauma, setting up a new phone, etc. Signal: Signal triggers act like reminders of who we are, what we can do, or what we want to do. Internal triggers are from within the individual and not influenced by environmental factors, and Synthetic triggers are behavioural stimuli that an individual intentionally brings up.
