Focus means working smart. Focus means Saying NO to tens of GOOD ideas. Focus means Saying YES to a couple of GREAT ones. Focus means the ability to know the difference between good and great. Working hard is a recipe for burnout, this is how I feel, Working smart is a recipe for getting off the hamster wheel. Working hard is good, but working smart is better. Working hard in today’s world is a bit too outdated.

It’s all about: concentrating, staying engaged and paying attention. Your focusing skill is developed through activities such as doing homework, concentrating on tests, and listening to teachers and classmates. Being able to concentrate on what you’re doing helps you complete tasks quickly and more effectively. In school, Practise paying attention in class by listening to what your teacher is saying and asking you to do. In work: Make sure you’re listening to your customers and colleagues by not scrolling on your devices while they speak. Tune out non-essential information by completing one task at a time. Employers want to hear in your CVs, applications and interviews about how you’ve used your focus. They’ll want to know you can see a task through to the end in good time. You may be asked to describe a time you sorted information into categories to help break up a task, paid attention to a particular piece of work to achieve an end goal, or filtered out unnecessary information when working on a project or task.

Do remember that the emphasis of ‘job focus’ is on both “proficiency” and “interest”. If you are good at a particular skill, but aren’t really keen on using it now or in the future, you shouldn’t list it under ‘job focus’. We wanted a term that helped us convey two things about ourselves to others: The skills we are proficient in. The skills we are keen on using – those that energise us.
