Getting prepared ahead of the training day is the golden rule to making the most of it. Ask your chosen training provider for a copy of the session’s itinerary and conduct some of your own research at home. Make sure you arrive at the training day with a notebook and pen. You will likely want to take notes and having these resources to hand will prevent any disruptions during the session. The last thing you want is to miss important pieces of information because you’re sitting too far away from the speaker, so make sure you sit near the front and have a clear view of the screen. Although everything you need to know will be covered during the session, it pays to have a basic grasp of what you’ll be learning. This way, you will be prepared to ask questions and to clear up anything you don’t quite understand. You should also take a water bottle and lunch (if required) so that you’re comfortable throughout the day. Review what you have learned after the training day, take an hour to sit and review what you have learned.

Keep your programme interesting by avoiding classic formats. Include a mix of activities that include listening, participating, and even physical activity – there’s nothing worse than spending an entire day being talked at. Get people thinking Group brainstorming sessions, problem-solving, quizzes, and dare we mention it…role play? Consider what your colleagues may enjoy and get the most out of activity-wise – the point is to get people thinking about their roles, how these interact with others, and how you can improve to become a more successful team and business. Regular breaks Your team will get fatigued quickly if regular breaks aren’t scheduled throughout the day – aim for 1 morning and afternoon break, as well as a lunch break at a minimum. Also, consider where breaks are in relation to the intensity of different parts of your programme. Outdoor and indoor space Choose a venue that has both indoor and outdoor space to give your colleagues the chance to get some fresh air and a change of scenery. Additional flexible event space Choose a venue that offers a variety of spaces – it’s always good to consider having a breakout room for your colleagues who may need some quiet time to recharge, or even need a space to quietly catch up on emails in the breaks.

To structure a training day, organise a training event with options such as a twilight, half or full-day training day. Teachers revolve around workshops where they see their colleagues taking them through particular HOW2s. Use Nudge to communicate content and the HOW2 Presentation viewing format to talk through their work. Alternatively, alternate teachers between presenting their HOW2s, and viewing others’ presentations during the half or full-day training event, or alternate twilight session. Allocate time for teachers to view the HOW2s demonstrated, discussing with colleagues their plans for adaptation. Use Notes to capture ideas and thoughts. Ask the identified teachers if at a forthcoming training event, they would run a 10 minute presentation at a forthcoming training day, video their teaching using the HOW2, or write up their ideas. Use Nudge to contact identified teachers and ask them to use Notes to collect their ideas and thoughts.
