To supervise a dog outside, don't leave your dog unattended in a front yard or a yard with public access. Dogs can become very stressed by all the passing people and other animals. This can increase the chance your dog will become aggressive or may bite an innocent person. If you do keep your dog on a line, check with local laws that dictate length of lead and maximum time allowed. Your dog must always have food, water, and shelter, that is the law. NEVER LEAVE A LINE ON THE DOG WHEN YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO WATCH THE DOG CONSTANTLY. Do not leave an untrained dog unattended. Create a safe area for your pet to stay or crate train your dog.
Obedience train your dog, as dogs do not speak our language and don’t know what you expect of them unless taught. Your dog needs to be exercised regularly with walks, playtime, or obedience training. He also needs plenty of fresh water, food, regular grooming, and given the daily opportunity to spend time with their human companion, being petted and loved. Dogs need to play, so play fun games like hide and seek or retrieving a ball. spcaLA does not recommend keeping your dog on a line.

All dogs must be constantly supervised in their yards for their safety. Dogs of any size can scale fences within minutes of an owner’s inattention. DAWG recommends complete, physical fencing of a yard so a dog can exercise freely with minimal danger. The best fencing is privacy fencing, because a dog cannot see through it and therefore is less likely to go over or under it. Physical fencing is not a guarantee of safety, because children and delivery services can leave gates open, and other animals such as bats, bees and snakes can gain access to yards. DAWG recommends checking on the condition of fencing and digging/jumping deterrents on a regular basis, securing all gates with locks, and installing outdoor floodlights to illuminate the entire yard so that a dog’s “adventures” in the yard are clearly seen at night.

Always take sensible safety precautions, and be alert to risks that may affect your dog outside. A suitable outdoor dog kennel - this should be large enough to allow separate sleeping and activity areas. It's very important that your dog can comfortably walk, run and wag their tail within the walls of their kennel, and can play, stand on their hind legs, stretch and lie down without touching another animal or kennel. Shelter and protection from rain, wind and sunlight - dogs should always be able to move where they feel more comfortable, away from direct sunlight and into the shade. Temperature and ventilation - heating and/or automatic cooling and ventilation may also be necessary to keep temperatures above 10°C and below 26°C. We also advise monitoring the temperature daily. Health and wellbeing needs - provide constant access to clean drinking water and a well-balanced diet. Use a sturdy water bowl and check regularly for refills. We also advise that you check your dog daily for any signs of injury or illness. Social needs - always make sure your dog is able to behave normally and is provided with the opportunity for daily exercise, play and interaction with animals and people. Making sure your dog has appropriate company is an important consideration for outdoor dogs.
