Daily planning: 5–10 minutes. That’s not much, but it’s the difference between working on other peoples’ priorities and living your dreams. Weekly planning: 20–30 minutes. In less time than it takes to order a pizza, you can be certain you’re making progress towards your goals. Quarterly planning: At least an hour; a full 8-hour day if you can arrange it. Annual planning: One or two days, total. When you add it up, you should spend two or three days each year on lower-level (weekly and daily) tactical planning and somewhere between half a week and a week on higher-level (quarterly and annual) strategic planning. It may sound like a lot, but it averages out to just 18 minutes per day. Take 18 minutes a day to make sure you know what you’re doing with the other 1422.

Don't spend too much time and try to spend under 10 mins a day. I usually spend about 5 minutes planning my day. You shouldn't spend time planning reoccurring activities, as they should already be added to your day automatically at a specific time. I like to plan my day as a quick 5-minute meditation. I barely plan my days, but if I did, I would say like maybe 10 – 15 min so it doesn't become a waste of my day. As much time as you see fit to set all of your goals in an achievable manner, this could be anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours depending on how much planning you deem necessary. It really depends on how much time you have during your day.

I recently started spending 15 minutes at the end of every day planning the next on my calendar. Planning the day before helps me visualize what my day will look like as a whole. At first, you may feel you can’t devote that extra 15 minutes to your calendar. Planning at the end of the day allows me to leave the office somewhat relaxed and not feeling like I need to stay up all night to get everything done. I’ve also learned that being more organized has taken a lot of stress out of my life. But trust me on this, and try it out.
