Time out reduces stress. Stress creates havoc with our physical and emotional health. A growing body of evidence shows that skipping breaks can lead to stress and exhaustion. Completely divesting from your work on a regular basis reduces inflammation and the risk of heart disease. Getting away from work boosts your immune system. Chronic stress also depresses your immune system. Conversely adequate sleep and exercise are two of four essentials of boosting your immune system. Taking regular time away from work restores mental energy. You probably know that just from your own experience. Studies show that people who do not know how to detach from work during their off time experience increased exhaustion over the course of one year and are less resilient in the face of stressful work conditions.

A rest day is as important as the workout routine itself and they should be taken, regardless of whether you’re feeling tired or not. You might think that muscle growth happens in the gym. Actually, it happens when you let your muscles rest. When you exercise, small tears are created in your muscles and it’s only when you take time out, that these tears heal and leave you with stronger muscles than before. If you’re choosing to go heavy on squats every single day of the week, your quads, hamstrings, and glutes will never have time to repair and grow. So essentially, it negates the point of your workout.

Rest days are an important part of any exercise program. They give the body a chance to repair and recover, and help to prevent injury. The health benefits of rest days include alleviating muscle pain and soreness, repairing and building muscles, replenishing the body’s energy stores, and preventing injury. Exercise creates microscopic tears in muscle tissue, and during rest days, cells called fibroblasts repair and build up the muscle tissue. Rest days allow the muscles to replenish their glycogen stores, thereby reducing muscle fatigue and preparing the muscles for their next workout. Allowing the mind to rest is also important, as overexercising can tire the mind as well as the body, leading to poor decision making during a workout routine, which increases the risk of injury. Without a rest day, muscles, joints, and other important structures do not have adequate time to repair themselves, and people may also become mentally exhausted and more prone to making mistakes while training. Continually pushing on without a rest day will eventually lead to injury.

Maintaining an unremitting level of commitment to everything and everyone can eventually become counter-productive and ultimately negatively impact all areas of life. When you consider that there are over 360 documented symptoms of stress it’s hardly surprising that stress and its impact has become such an important ‘red flag’. Sleep, concentration, sense of humour, as well as a miscellany of aches and pains are only some of the areas affected by stress. So taking regular breaks and, in particular, rest days and holidays are important ways to wind down and recalibrate or even switch off at times. Rest days provide an alternative to the full-on, singular focus that may well be our usual way of operating on a daily basis. It allows us to refresh our priorities, remind us of what’s really important in our lives and take a little care of ourselves. Afterwards we may return with new ideas and a fresh perspective on lingering problems and concerns, plus it’s good to occasionally remind ourselves and others that no one’s indispensable. Taking rest days and holidays is an important way to improve our sleep, our general health, wellbeing and consequently our relationships, work performance and quality of life. Everything benefits when we take some time out.
