Keep the lights around you on. It may not be the best for your electric bill, but it is good for your mood and level of alertness. Have a list of things that you can do inside the house; not just pending chores, but also healthy distractions you enjoy like reading or watching a movie. Don’t skip your workout. You can still go to the gym or find an exercise video online that you can do inside the house. Cook yourself or your family a nice dinner. It will refrain you from eating unnecessary snacks, keep you busy and give you a sense of comfort. Dial in with loved ones, a rainy day is the perfect time to call that friend or family member you’ve been meaning to catch up with. Make sure you keep up with your nighttime routine, sleeping well can make a huge difference in maintaining a healthy brain and body. Take mental breaks, if you are at work, walk around during your breaks, talk to a co-worker, share your lunch or indulge in a cup of warm tea. Find gratitude in the storm, watch the rain, enjoy the sound it makes as it falls and be grateful to the water for feeding our environment. Meditate and use these feelings of gratitude to stay positive and grounded in the present.

Try to focus on doing something fun at least for a few minutes every day - so we've been turning the TV off a little more and actually playing. It's a little more difficult, because I'm forever on the computer doing something related to Thrive, but it's actually really helped me to feel better, and it's led to a lot of super cute moments. Keep Moving - I know when it's cold and wet I'm super duper cold and even achy--but let's remember, an Object in Motion tends to stay in motion, so let's not let this week of biblical rains get us off our New Year's Resolutions. Try not to go straight to the comfort foods, I noticed that after a few days of heavy foods, it made me feel even more sluggish -- which isn't ideal when the whole world is presently sluggish with all this rain. Hot tea helps to warm you up almost as good as the casserole. You and I know deep down that the rain will eventually go away, so maybe think about the fun things you'll get to do when it finally does stop raining, or maybe think about how pretty the spring flowers will be in just a few short weeks. The bottom line is, remind yourself that there is hope --think of something beautiful in your life and then try to experience a part of that beauty--whether it's a quick playtime with little ones in a homemade fort, or it's disconnected conversation time with your favorite person. Just like Little Orphan Annie said, the sun'll come out.... You got this.

Avoid the rainy-day blues with a few of these screen free boredom-busting activities. Unleash Their Inner Van Gogh With Bathtub Painting is an absolutely genius way to let your kiddos go wild with color while protecting your home from the majority of the mess. Simply tape their canvas of choice – large sheets of craft paper are our favorite – onto the bathtub wall. Hand those kiddos some paint and let them go wild. Play Alphabet Hide-and-Seek is a twist on hide-and-seek that gets those little bodies moving and their brains working in this simple-to-set-up indoor letter hunt. Simply label brightly colored Post-It notes from A-Z and hide them around your house, then the game is on. Visit the Dinosaur Beach with kinetic sand, a few plastic trees and a few dinosaurs for a guaranteed good time. Kids can build sandcastles with their velociraptor friends, make t-rex footprints in the sand, and let their triceratops sunbathe under a pretend palm tree. Play the Floor Is Lava requires zero equipment – just an open space and some tunes. Queue up the music and get your kids moving with an easy game of “The Floor Is Lava”. When it stops, Quick, they have five seconds to get off the floor before it turns into melty, hot lava. Score Beat Boredom With Pom Pom Hockey when your kids have been stuck indoors and have energy to burn, they may start to drive you and each other up the wall. Take that pent up energy and turn it into some friendly competition with a raucous game of Pom Pom Hockey.

Make a date – Any date! With yourself, a friend, family, significant other, your pet…you get the point! Having something to look forward to in the week helps make the week that much better. This could be a breakfast, lunch or dinner date or simply making a plan to go and shop around your favorite store. It could also be treating yourself to takeout one night so you don’t have to worry about the cooking and can just relax. Treat yourself – I have a few favorite coffee shops around our apartment that I love going to. Sometimes just getting out of your house or job (if possible) for a few minutes to clear your mind and get yourself a treat is the best answer. Listen to music – I do this all day every day, but sometimes I forget to turn music on when working from home and start to get into a mid-day slump, then quickly realize this could be why. Get cozy – As much as I am an advocate for getting up and ready for the day, there are many days where you just need to stay in loungewear all day long (the weekends typically fall into this category) and that’s okay! Toss on your favorite slippers, a cozy sweatshirt and pj shorts and embrace all the cozy feels.

To start, one of the easiest ways to help kickstart your own happiness during the rainy-day blues is meditation. Meditation is quite simple, and it can be done in the comfort of your home at any time. Not only does it relax your entire body and mind, but it also relieves stress and negative energy from your nervous system. Spending Time with loved ones will go a long way for you to overcome any kind of sadness or mental fatigue that ensues during a rainy day. This can be any kind of loved one like family, friends, husbands or wives, and even your pets. Looking at rainy-days differently can also help, instead of veering upwards during a storm and thinking negative thoughts, remember that behind every cloud or storm, there is a sky so blue, the ocean gets jealous from time to time. Think of the rain as something that nourishes all the flowers, plants, and animals that we cherish so dearly. Doing what you love is perhaps the most important reliever of the rainy-day blues. Each person is different and loves to do something that is unique to themselves. It is indeed difficult to desire to do anything but sleep or feel sad on days like today, trust me, but I have found this to be so powerful not only to your mood but for your overall love for life.

Buy a sunrise alarm clock. A lack of sun exposure has been linked to decreased levels of serotonin, which can lead to depression and anxiety. Each morning, your sunrise alarm clock gradually brightens the room so you can wake up naturally, rather than abruptly by your phone’s alarm clock. Your clock will also have a sunset setting to create a relaxing and calm environment at bedtime to help you fall asleep with ease. Move your body daily. Moving your body may feel like the last thing you want to do when it’s cozy season, but exercising releases endorphins that will instantly make you feel better. It doesn't need to be long, it might be morning yoga, a brisk walk, swimming, or a mini-home workout. Take advantage of daylight. Fresh air and sunlight is good for you, so even if it’s chilly outside, cover up and take a walk outdoors to take advantage of the daylight. Switch up your routine. Routines are essential for your mental health as they allow you to build healthy habits which helps you to avoid burnout. Book a vacation. Sometimes we just need something to look forward to. If you can, book a vacation for a little change of scenery. This will help your mood and boost your creativity.
