I’ve been walking 10k steps on weekdays and 20k on Saturday for a couple weeks now. It’s going to be raining all week, I don’t really want to be out there in the rain. The time I finish work, gym will be a rush hour so I’ll rather not attend.

Taking the stairs is an efficient way to up your step count during the day. Although working from home may diminish the number of stairs you encounter, spending ten to 20 minutes marching up and down the stairs or taking short breaks to climb up and down can drastically increase your step count. So, any Zoom meetings or phone calls during the working day where you don’t need to be at your laptop or on video, take the call whilst moving around your house or doing laps around the garden. Walking, even at a slow speed is a good way to burn calories and fat, with a one-hour walk burning around 210 and 360 calories and equating to around six to seven thousand steps depending on the length of your stride. To combat this, take extra trips. For example, when taking your laundry upstairs or bringing your shopping in from the car, instead of trying to take everything in one go, try taking a couple more trips than may be necessary to get some extra steps in.

One option is indoor walking, simply walk in place while watching your favorite TV show, listening to music, or talking on the phone. It may not feel like you're going anywhere, but the steps will add up. If you're looking for something more dynamic, try dancing to music or following an aerobics routine. Activities like zumba, skipping, jumping jacks, and hopping are also excellent exercises that can be done at home. You can explore other indoor spaces too, consider walking the hallways of your apartment building, office complex, or a large shopping mall. If you have access to a treadmill or stationary bike either at home or at a gym, make use of them for indoor walking. Additionally, you can engage in indoor games like table tennis, badminton, or mini golf with your family and friends. Even everyday activities like climbing up and down the stairs, dusting, and mopping can contribute to your step count. Remember, the rain should not hinder you from reaching your step goal, embrace indoor options and find ways to stay active regardless of the weather.
