Coconut oil is known for its healing properties. It may be ideal for your dog if he is suffering from obesity, mobility issues due to joint or bone health conditions, to treat wounds, to help him acquire more energy, and much more. Coconut oil is rapidly absorbed, improving digestive health and helping your dog’s body with absorbing important vitamins and minerals. This oil can also prevent any allergies from impacting your dog, such as seasonal allergies, inhalant allergies, and even food allergies. Coconut oil for allergies in dogs is an effective way to help dogs with skin allergies and infections. Many veterinarians, including holistic veterinarians, recommend this type of essential oil to help treat a wide range of skin ailments.

Coconut oil is a hot health trend right now, and it’s being used in everything from cooking to candles to face moisturizers. Many pet owners mention that they’ve tried using coconut oil to relieve their dogs’ itchy skin, but didn’t see much help from it. While topical coconut oil has been shown to be beneficial in human children with Atopic Dermatitis, there is no scientific research available to evaluate its use in dogs. Clinically, I have not seen much benefit in my allergic canine patients. They especially like triglycerides, a special type of fat found in high concentrations in both olive oil and coconut oil. Putting coconut oil on the skin may in fact be fueling secondary yeast infections. If you’re looking for a safe, topical treatment to improve your dog’s skin barrier, I would definitely recommend one of these canine products rather than coconut oil.

Coconut oil can cause your dog to gain weight. You should add 120 calories for every teaspoon of coconut oil for your dog. It’s safe to feed your dog coconut oil. But some potential reactions or digestive problems can occur. If you give your dog too much coconut oil, they can get diarrhea. In some cases, your dog might have an allergy to coconut oil. Signs of an allergy include an upset stomach and itching. Ease allergic reactions to outdoor pollen.

Coconut oil can be given to dogs for a variety of reasons, but mainly for its medium-chain triglycerides as a source of saturated fat. As with any food, watch for signs of an allergic reaction such as hives or itchy skin. Coconut oil applied to the skin can also cause an allergic reaction, making any current skin condition or itching worse. Using coconut oil on dogs, whether through ingestion or topical use, carries the following risks to their health: Allergic reactions, Itchy skin, Hives, red bumps, or scabbing, Worsening of existing skin condition and itch. While coconut oil offers potential benefits for dogs, it also poses risks such as stomach upset, pancreatitis, and allergic reactions. Coconut oil is not helpful for dogs with constipation, as large quantities ingested will cause painful stomach upset and pancreatitis, along with a possible allergic reaction. Always consult with a veterinarian before adding coconut oil to your dog’s routine, to ensure its appropriateness for their individual health needs.
