Generally, if your pet is fit and healthy then piriton will be safe to give. However, as a human medication, only your vet can prescribe piriton under the “veterinary cascade”. It is illegal to give your pet any human medication without direct supervision of a veterinary surgeon. Piriton isn’t recommended for pets with certain medical conditions. If piriton is used in some of these unwell pets, severe adverse effects, even seizures and death could be the consequence- so let your vet advise you if your pet is able to take any medication, the dose and frequency of giving it. The dose will be prescribed based on your pets’ weight. In healthy pets with no pre-existing conditions, piriton can be useful in some circumstances. Piriton may be useful alongside other medications or included in your treatment protocol, which can be discussed with your vet.
