The spring and summer seasons can bring high pollen counts as well as warmer weather, which can induce allergy symptoms in some of our furry friends. Spring and summer allergies are often related to plant pollen. In March and April, tree pollens are most active, whereas grass pollen is the most likely culprit May – July, and flowering weeds can cause reactions in later summer. These times may vary depending on where you live and the local climate, but knowing roughly when your pet is most reactive can help with avoiding the allergens as much as possible. If your pet seems reactive in the warmer seasons, then there are ways you can help them manage. Plan outside time for early mornings or late afternoon/evening, when pollen counts are lowest. Reactions in the spring and summer are usually to various types of pollen.

March and April: tree pollen
May, June and July: grass pollen
June, July and August: flowering weeds.
Try to work out when in the year your pet is most affected by their pollen allergy.
This will help give you an idea of the type of pollen causing the problem and the areas you might want to avoid.
Tired or lethargic, particularly on days when the pollen count is high.
If it's worse in summer and better in winter, pollen is the most likely culprit!
Check the pollen forecast each day so you know what to expect.
Plan walkies for before dawn, late afternoon or early evening.
The pollen count is usually lower at these times.

Spring is notorious for causing allergies in both humans and dogs. Pollen from trees, grasses, and flowers becomes more abundant during this season. Dogs that are allergic to pollen can experience itching, redness, and discomfort. While summer brings warm weather and outdoor fun, it can also spell trouble for dogs with allergies. Grass pollen levels remain high, and increased outdoor activities can expose dogs to more allergens. Fall can be a challenging time for dogs with allergies due to ragweed pollen and mold spores. Ragweed is a potent allergen, and mold spores thrive in damp, decaying organic matter. Winter typically sees a decrease in outdoor allergens like pollen, however, dogs with indoor allergies may still suffer during the colder months. Dust mites, indoor mold, and certain household cleaners can trigger allergies, leading to dry, flaky skin and persistent itching.

Spring and summer are often the worst months for pet allergies to flare. Signs of contact allergies, atopy and food sensitivities are often seen in pets and may be year-round, with worsening symptoms during warmer months when pollens and other allergens are increased in the environment. A small percentage of my pet patients show more itchy skin, also called pruritis, during the winter months when their homes and skin become drier.
