If a school gets early transition right, then they will reap the benefits for years to come, with children deeply engaged in their learning. Research suggests that transitions are central to young children’s development and emotional well-being and the way in which they are handled could have a significant impact on the child’s capacity to cope with change in the future. The steps we have already taken and the continued investment in resourced to minimise the risk of COVID-19 and strengthen our ability to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment, will make the next transition a positive one, for every individual. Pupils at Bridgewater School have the same positive transition in Years 6 to 7 when they continue their journey into Senior School, with the distinct areas of our school blending seamlessly into our very special Bridgewater family.

A smooth transition between year groups with the support of teachers and parents, is critical to how a child will feel about a new teacher and a new school year. Preparing children for transitions can start as early as the beginning of Term 3, often before new class teachers have been decided. Current teachers can support students by familiarising them with the expectations, routines and curriculum of their new year group. Effective communication between staff plays a vital role in a smooth transition for children. Providing children with effective emotional support during these times is vital to children’s mental health. By acknowledging and validating children’s feelings, teachers can create a safe and nurturing environment where they feel understood and supported. Ending the school year by meeting the new teacher and spending time in their new classroom can help alleviate some of these worries for young children. It is important for them to feel familiar with their new setting before having a long end of year break. Overall, teachers’ and parents’ proactive involvement in the transition process can help to create positive learning environments, support children in their concerns, and help them navigate the exciting journey of progressing to the next year group with confidence.

A smooth transition out of education is essential for preparing students for the demands of the professional world and coping with the many new experiences and expectations they will be faced with. They can be infinitely more stressful than micro changes, and while all learners benefit from having a positive experience of transition, learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) often find macro changes more challenging than their peers, and require extra support. Fortunately, there are plenty of general strategies proven to help prepare learners for employment. Providing access to tailored career counselling and guidance can aid in identifying individual strengths and interests. Integrating these skills into the curriculum prepares students for the challenges they will face in the professional world. The hope is that by implementing these strategies, we can better prepare young people for the transition out of education, ensuring they enter the workplace with the skills, confidence, and adaptability needed for success. Successful transitions are also the focus of a new Online SEND CPD Unit.
