You absolutely can walk your dog at night. In fact, nighttime dog walking actually has a range of advantages. Temperatures tend to be cooler – vital on those hot, summer days – while the outdoors are also generally quieter and more peaceful, which can be particularly helpful for nervous pups. However, walking a dog at night also creates several potential hazards to be aware of: Low Light & Visibility, Wildlife, and Reduced Temperatures. For your dog, opt for reflective or light-up clothing, and if it’s particularly cold outside, ensure your dog is wrapped up warm. Stick to Familiar Routes, and keep your dog on a lead to ensure control, especially with the heightened presence of wildlife. Be aware of your dog’s emotions, and don’t be afraid to find an alternative indoor activity if dog walking at night is making your pooch uncomfortable.

Walking my dogs at night means navigating dark, slick pavements and busy city streets. But dog walking at night doesn’t have to be unsafe. From eye-catching reflective gear to safe strategies, you can make nighttime dog walks fun and safe. Always use a lead, this one is non-negotiable, even if you live in an area without much traffic, and your dog has an excellent recall, you should always use a lead at night. Just like humans, dogs get startled by people or animals suddenly emerging from the dark. For the ultimate in nighttime walk safety, consider something like this reflective harness. Walking on familiar, main streets won’t only prevent you from getting lost in the dark, it will also help prevent run-ins with other creatures who may be prowling around at night. Walking your dog at night doesn’t have to be scary, with a familiar route and the right accessories, your evening outing can be a walk in the park.

Walking in the dark can sometimes be nerve-wracking for a dog, as there can be lots of new unknown sights and smells. Young dogs may have never walked in the dark so might need some time to get used to it. If you have a garden, playing with them in the evening might help ease them in to being outside in the dark, but associating it with enjoyment rather than fear. Take them out in the dark on their lead and let them go at their own pace. Even if it means standing still outside your house and reassuring them it’s ok. Stick to familiar routes, as walking the same routes means you and your dog will expect any upcoming hazards that you can prepare for. Choosing routes with well-lit pavements and paths will help you and your dog feel safer and more comfortable while walking. If your dog does struggle with walking in the dark, they may prefer to go on a longer walk at lunchtime, so that the evening walk only has to be fairly short.

Walking your dog at night doesn’t have to be a risky quest. With preparation and the right gear, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable walk with your furry friend. While your pup may need some fresh air in the evenings, it is important to try to schedule therapy dog visits during the daytime. Streets or parks with recreational lighting can enhance your visibility, safety, and enjoyment. Walking in these areas makes it easier to spot potential hazards such as uneven pavement, broken glass, or even other animals. Plus, better visibility for you also means better visibility for drivers on the road to see you. To keep your nighttime walk routine going throughout the winter, ATD recommends using extra caution to ensure the well-being of both you and your canine.

Would it be considered strange to walk dogs at midnight. With how hot it’s been, I’ve been walking my dogs around 11pm or 12am because it’s a little cooler. I’ve been hearing neighbors dogs bark at night when I pass by so I wasn’t sure if it was considered strange or a nuisance.
