When house training or crate training young puppies, take them out to poop or pee every two hours, especially after they wake up from naps and following playtime or meals. Adult dogs typically need a minimum of three to five bathroom breaks every six to eight hours per day. Adult dogs require potty breaks every six to eight hours, while puppies can hold their bladders for one hour for each month of their age. Younger dogs—those under the age of five—have higher energy levels than middle-aged or senior dogs, and require three to four walks and three to five daily bathroom breaks. Older dogs may have health conditions that reduce their daily walking time and stamina, and they may need more frequent urination breaks due to incontinence or loss of bladder control.

Before going to bed at night, give your puppy a “last call” and allow them one last chance to use the toilet before you go to sleep. Use the ‘last call’ system before bed. It’s a great way of teaching your puppy that it’s time to calm down and go to sleep and also reduces the chance of them making a mess on your furniture during the night. Take them out during the night, but only for the first few months. So, for the initial few weeks, make sure you set an alarm during the night to let your puppy use the bathroom (usually around 6 hours after their last potty break). If your puppy doesn’t have an accident during those hours for a few weeks, start to increase the time between their last toilet break before bed and you taking them out at night. Delaying their potty break by 15 minutes every night will teach them to wait a little longer to do their business, eventually turning it into a morning routine. Once your puppy is three or four months old, they will most likely be able to go the full night (7 to 8 hours) without a toilet break.

If you walk at 7pm I’d offer the chance for the garden every night before bed. Last walk sometimes pre-7pm and sometimes later up till 10pm depending on commitments. If anything, the routine is important. But if you want to stop accompanying, scale back gradually- keeping closer & closer to the back door etc.

Limit water and food at least two hours before bedtime. Make sure your dog goes outside to potty before bed-even if that means they have to go on a walk. This will let them know that they have to go potty because you are headed to bed. Often dogs will deep sleep hours before we actually go to bed. If that is the case, then they will be well rested at 4am and will want to wake up and go potty. Try to wake up before they do.

I've read the books on dog training and they say to take her out right when you go to bed, say 10-11pm. My husband thinks that's mean as we have to wake her. I say it's ok to wake her as she goes back to sleep right away. He'd rather let her sleep and then listen for her whine, but that means my turn. Our Stella Blue is now 14 weeks old and has an 8pm bedtime. She's being crate trained and gets walked in our backyard to go outside in a special spot. But then she can go in her crate up until 7 am.

Make sure your puppy has eaten his last meal of the day at least three hours before bedtime. This gives him enough time to digest and use the bathroom before bed. Take a walk and have a final, gentle playtime about an hour before bed. When puppies are young, they need to go to the bathroom every two to four hours. If your puppy cries during the night, is awake or unsettled, and it has been at least a few hours since he last went to the bathroom, then assume he needs to go again. Quietly take your puppy out without interacting much or playing with him. As soon as your puppy goes to the bathroom, immediately go back inside and quietly go back to bed.
