Walking your dog at night doesn’t have to be a risky quest. With preparation and the right gear, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable walk with your furry friend. While your pup may need some fresh air in the evenings, it is essential to try to schedule therapy dog visits during the daytime. People may have trouble interacting with your therapy dog if they can’t see them in the dark. Streets or parks with recreational lighting can enhance your visibility, safety, and enjoyment. Walking in these areas makes it easier to spot potential hazards such as uneven pavement, broken glass, or even other animals. Plus, better visibility for you also means better visibility for drivers on the road to see you. Overall, having your dog on a leash during nighttime walks is in the best interest of your pet and shows consideration for other pedestrians. If you are wearing headphones, keep the volume down or try using just one earbud. Dogs are known to have exceptional instincts and are likely to act protective of their owners when there are signs of danger. If your dog wants to pull you away from an area, it might be okay to let them sometimes.

It’s gonna be a hot week and while my dogs can generally handle how hot the weather will get I don’t want them to have to. Would I be horrible if I woke them up at midnight to walk them? They’re 8 and 6. All I had to do was ask if they wanna go to get trampled. They were both dead asleep snoring. My 6 year old probably would’ve enjoyed the walk the most had she not been spooked every two seconds. All in all: we’ll be doing more of these.

You absolutely can walk your dog at night. In fact, nighttime dog walking actually has a range of advantages. Temperatures tend to be cooler – vital on those hot, summer days – while the outdoors are also generally quieter and more peaceful, which can be particularly helpful for nervous pups. However, walking a dog at night also creates several potential hazards to be aware of. That being said, don’t be afraid to find an alternative indoor activity if dog walking at night is making your pooch uncomfortable. The ideal time for a night walk depends on your schedule, your dog’s routine, and the reason you’re walking at night in the first place. Aim to keep your walks early enough in the evening that there are still enough people around to be safe, and if that’s not possible, consider an alternative form of exercise that can be done indoors. Be aware of Your Dog’s Emotions: Stay alert and keep an eye on how your dog responds to walking in the dark. Some dogs may need a little reassurance so consider using ThunderShirt by ADAPTIL to provide some extra comfort.

Walking also releases excess energy and helps dogs sleep better at night. Dogs are actually much better than humans at seeing in the dark. They have larger pupils with more light-sensitive rods than we do, so they're able to make better use of what little light is available. They also possess tapetums, which are like mirrors at the back of their eyes that reflect light - this is why their eyes can appear to glow in the dark, just like cats. Be sure to always keep a watchful eye on your dog’s behaviour and body language to ensure that they are enjoying the walk so that you can make necessary adjustments if needed. With routines playing such an important part in human lives, it should come as no surprise that dogs also appreciate that same consistency. If you find that you're taking your dog for walks after dark, use these tips to keep you and your dog safe so that you can enjoy some quality bonding time, whatever the time and weather.
