So I began to ask writers to pause before walking away from the experience, to record even just five minutes of thought. To pin thoughts down to paper in the daily rush and jumble. From that came the realization that it is an idea to do the same for the daily writing time — to write about the challenges and accomplishments, the questions, the partial answers. In other words, the Process of the work as it takes shape.

To create a process journal, it is a working document, it does not need to be neat and well presented. Document your thinking, ideas and the development of the project. It can be written, visual, audio or a combination of these and might include both paper and electronic formats. Each entry in your process journal should be clearly dated for your future reference. Divide your journal into four sections: Investigating, Planning, Taking Action and Reflecting. Print off each of these four templates and paste them at the beginning of each of the corresponding sections. They will remind you of what criteria you need to address in each of the four sections. Possible things to include in your process journal are Work completed this week, Resources consulted, Challenges or difficulties faced, Evaluation of progress. Show your supervisor evidence of the process documented in the journal at every meeting or by providing digital access. The Process Journal Content Checklist is a guide to be used before and during the project to ensure the process journal contains evidence and tracks the development of the project. ATL skill checklist can be printed and pasted into your journal on every page, tick the particular ATL skill that your page addresses, e.g. research, thinking, self-management, communication and social.

Your process journal is where you collect the evidence that demonstrates you have the skills and attitudes of an IB learner. You will start your process journal on the first day of the personal project, and use it to record all your work, every step of the way. Your process journal can take many different forms, and you can choose what style of journal works best for you. Some of the more popular formats are: Physical notebook, Google Drive, Managebac. Any work you do towards your project should go into your journal. There is no limit on the number of entries, so it's good to get in the habit of screenshot-ing your research, and taking photos or videos whenever you can. If you go with a physical notebook, you must scan your book regularly to have a digital backup. Make sure that your documents are labelled and dated so you can find things easily.
