You need a time, a place, and a plan. Decide when you will journal. Pick a time that makes sense for your life. Maybe you’re a mom and you need to journal first thing in the morning before your kids wake up. Maybe you decide to journal during your lunch break or before bed. Decide where you will journal. Will you journal in bed or sitting in your favorite chair? Decide what you will journal about. Once it’s time to journal you don’t want to waste that precious time staring at a blank page. You need to schedule when you will journal. Try journaling for just 3 minutes a day and slowly add to that as journaling becomes more of a habit.

Fill it in for at least three days (a week is even better). Each morning — or the night before — print out a clean copy and fill in your priorities, then update the bottom half throughout the day. In the "Things to Do" section, list your most important tasks by order of priority, starting with the essential to-do at the top. No, you don't have to list 10 tasks, but do try to complete at least the top three by day's end. The important tasks you don't complete should move to your to-do list the following day. In the "Things to Note" section, list patterns that keep you from maximizing your time. Note all interruptions — and the source. Record time traps. Examples: minutes spent searching through cluttered closets and piles of paper because you've lost something important. Last-minute events and time wasted on errands should also be noted in this column. Once you've filled out this journal, pinpoint your prime time, or when you function best.

To make a time journal, my journal is not themed or focused. I tend to record the good things and the way I generally feel, but it could be whatever comes to mind. But there are many ways you could use this kind of journaling, either with the same theme each day, or with a mix to match your mood or add variety through the week. Record what you are grateful for each day. It could be a list of several things, big and small. or a sentence describing one thing relevant to your day. Describe a moment from your day that felt especially precious, joyful or peaceful. Think of something you have achieved, whether it’s a big goal or milestone, getting through your to-do list or cooking a new recipe – or even just getting through the day. Make a note of any article, book chapter or quote, podcast episode or TV programme from your day. Add a thought about what you’ve taken from it. What is your lesson from the day? What did you see today that was beautiful? Record your prevailing mood from the day, or how you are feeling as you sit down to write. Set an intention for the next day. How do you want to feel? How do you want to approach the day? Is there a specific thing you want to make time for? Is there something you missed today that you want to make up for tomorrow? Commit it to the page.
