This technique can be applied between the ages of 2 and 6 years old. The Naughty Step Technique for Discipline can be used for children in this age range. When a child has done something wrong the last thing they want hear is the authoritative voice of their parent. Trust in the technique, every child who is strong willed and feisty will immediately get off the step and walk away from it. The reason why they do this is to test, to see whether you will put them back on it. Follow through is critical to the success of being able to discipline your child for difficult and unruly behavior.

Timeout can be done with children of various ages, as the duration of the timeout is determined by the child's age, with 1 minute per year of their age. Order your child to remain in the time-out area for 1 minute per year of their age. For example, 4-year-olds stay for 4 minutes, 7-year-olds stay for 7 minutes, and ages are sometimes rounded up. Exceptions to this part of the rule can be made concerning older children, as long as any TV sets in the room remain off and other toys/games remain on the shelves. Should your child refuse to apologize or apologize in a way that's rude and they don't mean it, they shall remain again in timeout for the same additional minutes depending on their age until they choose to apologize after the expiration of their time.
