You may need to drink more fluids if you're in a hot environment or physically active for long periods. The Eatwell Guide recommends that people should aim to drink 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day. Water, lower-fat milk and sugar-free drinks, including tea and coffee, all count. Drink extra fluids if you've been sweating from physical activity, or if you're unwell – water is the best way to replace lost fluids. Daily fluid intake is important to stay hydrated, and most people should aim to drink enough during the day so their pee is a clear pale yellow colour.

OSHA suggests that employees working in extreme heat (heat index between 103˚F and 115˚F) should drink about four cups of water every hour. More if they are working in direct sunlight. Drinking water all day, especially while you’re working is critical to preventing heat related illness. Your body sweats to stay cool, but that also means that when you’re sweating, you’re losing the water your body needs to produce more sweat to stay cool. Pay attention to how you’re feeling throughout the day and try to break for water before you begin to feel thirsty. Thirst is one of the first signs that your body is getting dehydrated. Different people will have different hydration needs and will have different levels of tolerance for the heat.

People who are playing sports or working outdoors in hot weather should aim for a minimum of 1 ounce of fluid per pound of body weight. As a general guideline, individuals consume ½ ounce to 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. Water isn’t the only thing that contributes to overall hydration, foods with high water content and other beverages count, too. Hydrating foods include watermelon and other melons, tomatoes, cucumber, strawberries, bell peppers, celery, lettuce. These foods add to overall hydration status, but we still want to be hitting that baseline of at least half our body weight in ounces. Thirst may not kick in until we’re already dehydrated, thirst cues also can diminish with age. A more reliable sign of hydration levels is urine color, if it is apple-juice color, we’re not hydrated. We like when it’s that light, pale yellow color, that tells us we’re staying on top of it.

If you’re hotter and sweating more during exercise, you will need to drink more fluid to replenish what you’ve lost. A good starting point is to try and drink 35ml of water for every kilogram of body weight. For example: If you weigh 72kg, you should aim to drink around 2.5l of water per day. If you weigh 85kg, you should aim to drink around 3l of water per day. If you weigh 100kg, you should aim to drink around 3.5l of water per day. Current UK guidance indicates we should be drinking around 6 to 8 glasses of fluid per day. How much we need all depends on our age, weight, and exercise routine.

When working in very hot conditions, dehydration can seriously affect a worker’s health and their ability to function safely.
It is better to drink in small amounts to compensate for the effects of sweating.
When working at a high rate in heat stress conditions, workers should drink around 250 ml (half a pint) every 15 minutes.
If water loss is significantly greater through increased sweating, then they should increase the amount they drink proportionately.
Some situations make it harder for workers to drink, for example if they are wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).
In these situations you could encourage workers to drink: 500 ml (a pint) of water per hour before work starts the same amount during their rest periods.
