Most of us need between 1.5 and 2.5 litres of fluid a day which is the same as six to eight cups a day. However, extra fluid will be needed when sweating more, for example, through heavy work, exercise or in hot weather. The simplest way to know if you are drinking enough is to check the colour of your urine. Your urine should be pale or straw coloured. The darker your urine the more likely it is you need to increase your fluid intake. Try to have a drink at regular intervals throughout the day. If you cannot manage large amounts, try to have small sips throughout the day instead. Keep a drink close by to remind yourself to drink regularly and to keep track on how much you are managing. Foods can contribute to your fluid intake also, such as ice lollies, soup, stews, yoghurts and jelly. Some fruits and vegetables, such as melon, tomatoes and cucumber, are also good sources of fluid. It is important to drink, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Most people should aim to drink enough during the day so their pee is a clear pale yellow colour. The Eatwell Guide recommends that people should aim to drink 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day. Water, lower-fat milk and sugar-free drinks, including tea and coffee, all count. You may need to drink more fluids if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, in a hot environment, physically active for long periods, or ill or recovering from illness. Do drink regularly throughout the day. Drink extra fluids if you've been sweating from physical activity, or if you're unwell – water is the best way to replace lost fluids. The best drinks to give children are water and milk. Children can have pasteurised whole or semi-skimmed cows' milk, or goats’ or sheep’s milk, as a main drink from the age of 1.

You should drink plenty of fluids such as water, diluted squash and fruit juice to stay hydrated. The key is to drink regularly throughout the day. If you’re active, or if the weather is particularly hot, there’s a greater risk that you will become dehydrated. To stay hydrated, you should increase your fluid intake. You should drink at least 6-8 mugs of fluid throughout the day. Ensure the person has access to water or fluids and advise them of the recommended daily intake.
