I let my daughter chase ducks. I say, “Guess what? We’re going to the lake to feed the ducks and then we’re gonna chase ’em!” Some, like myself, think duck chasing is a sacred part of childhood and gets them close to understanding their own power in the world. It’s good exercise, mostly harmless to the child and the duck. There is a code of ethics to duck chasing. You must feed the ducks before you chase them. Also, scaring the ducks is okay but touching them is not. I don’t believe it’s cruel to the ducks, at least the ones at Lake Murray. Those birds are FAT and probably benefit from the exercise.

No contact made with the ducks, just chasing right behind. Don't chase the ducks, that's wrong. The kids ran away, the parent was shocked but said nothing. Is it bad for kids to chase ducks - YABU. If you don't think it's ok, would you tell a kid who was chasing ducks, to stop.

I don't think it teaches children empathy. Just teaches children that its fun to scare animals. And how are they to distinguish between scaring a pigeon and abusing a larger animal. It suggests that it is OK to chase/tease any animal. Hardly seems like good parenting, unless you want an aggressive kid.
