I have a lovely and biddable springer spaniel but he loves chasing pigeons/birds.
I am really keen to get a few ducks for slug control in the garden but I want to make sure they can live a peaceful and happy life.
I would also value the advice that this is a no go situation and should not get ducks.
Does anyone have any advice on how to train a dog not to go for ducks?

If the duck, runs and hollers it can set off a dog or cat in an instant. Your dog, cat, and other pets still have strong instincts.

You should be careful with dogs and introduce them to each other slowly. Cats shouldn't bother most ducks but some of the miniature breeds like the Call duck which is about the size of a pigeon would be at risk. If you have cats or neighbourhood cats that catch birds then it's worth keeping them away from your ducks.

Anyone who raises chickens will know the fear of allowing their dogs to run free around their birds, and I used to have that fear as well until I realized something by watching my dog Lilly. My huge fear during all of this though was, would my dog kill my birds?! I also wasn’t planning on getting a dog either, until one day I thought to myself… it would be so much easier to have a dog herd these birds to bed instead of me running around looking like a crazy person yelling at the birds to get to bed. I’ve always wanted a border collie for their agility, loyalty, and herding instinct.
