By following some simple steps and guidelines you can create happy, engaging and successful playtimes. At the start of a Positive Playtime project, carry out an audit and spend time observing children at play. The process involves evaluating, developing and improving playtimes and the outdoor space. This may include developing, reviewing or re-energising: Behaviour and relationships – playtime rules and responsibilities, rewards and sanctions, means of celebrating positive behaviour and co-operative play. The provision of effective strategies to encourage co-operative, responsible, pro-social behaviour, including games, circle time, playtime activity leaders, peer mediation, conflict resolution and social and emotional aspects of learning. Once this is complete, celebrate your strengths and look at areas of weakness, threats and possible opportunities. From that you can formulate an action plan that can be part of the School Development Plan and School Improvement Plan. Once you have worked out what needs to be done to move forward create SMART goals – Specific, Measurable And Realistic with a Time frame and enjoy the journey.

To overcome playground behaviour issues, it is important schools implement proactive strategies to support students to engage appropriately in the playground. These can include: Using social scripts, Setting up playground clubs and activities, Having support staff teach students how to interact and engage appropriately with their peers, Teaching students how to manage their emotions, Setting up a passive playground or quiet area in your playground. Children with ASD, ADHD, ODD often desperately want friends and to play with other children but don’t have the skills required. This can result in them getting in trouble for behaviour, becoming socially isolated, bullied or unable to maintain friendships.

Actively take steps to improve your lunchtime provision by agreeing which games will be taught and when. Teaching the same game to every class across the school – for example, during one PE lesson at the start of each half term. Making laminated rule cards and displaying them in the playground. Holding regular assemblies to focus on teaching co-operation, turn taking, and problem solving, and explaining why we need to follow rules. Teaching pupils fun, easy games that they can play, will keep them more actively occupied during lunchtime and reduce the number of negative incidents that need to be dealt with. Having a whole school push on looking for and acknowledging pupils who are playing co-operatively together and demonstrating the skills they have been taught. Teaching Lunchtime Supervisors how to play and manage the games, encouraging them to look for (and praise) appropriate play. Not only will this lead to an improvement in their lunchtime experience, but their social interaction skills will benefit too – having a positive impact throughout the day.

To improve my playground behavior, I should be approachable and proactive, and explain what bullying is, so I know I can come to a teacher if I experience it or see it. I should also learn to walk away if I feel unsafe or if using words to defend myself isn’t working. Setting ground rules for physical aggression can help, so I know the consequences ahead of time. I should use words instead of my body to communicate and remember that getting hit or shoved hurts. If I want a turn, I should ask, “Can I have a turn please?” I should also practice taking turns and sharing, and use phrases like “my turn,” “your turn,” to help me communicate with others. I can practice the language I need to know, such as “listen to me!” and let others know it’s OK to ask a peer or a teacher to clarify and break rules down into steps. I should also take a breath and think before I act to avoid taking risks on playground equipment.
