I felt overwhelmed by all the people there and wasn't able to participate in the conversation as well as I would've liked. I felt like anything I said would've been drowned out by how loud everyone was being, and I felt sort of like my mind was hazy and I couldn't concentrate with all that noise. I don't think I was really afraid to speak up and talk to them, but the noise was a significant factor. The place we went to was quite crowded and there was a lot of chatter going through the air.

Feeling stress when in large groups is very common, especially among people who already have social anxiety. Anxiety is caused by multiple factors including being passed down through genetics; however, it is possible for people to develop this distress due to the environmental factors they encounter. Adverse life experiences can also trigger behavioral responses that make people avoid environments that they experienced the trauma in and can even have an impact on their worldview. We all see the world through our own lens, and some circumstances have a big impact on people that can change the way they see things. Crowd anxiety can be a result of this. Humans naturally feel anxiety, which is a good characteristic in small amounts. As people experience the world, most learn to effectively cope with these feelings. We just emerged from a major pandemic, so understandably, people may be hesitant to put themselves in situations they were previously comfortable in. Anyone can develop crowd anxiety.

You may experience an increased heart rate, sweating, trembling, or nausea. Other possible symptoms include difficulty concentrating or focusing, feeling overwhelmed or panicked, and a desire to avoid crowds at all costs. The extreme level of noise, activity, or chaos of a large crowd can be a trigger. Fearing that you won’t be able to leave quickly in an emergency can also be a trigger. Being concerned about possible harm from others in the event of an accident or emergency can cause feelings of anxiety. Some of the common symptoms of anxiety in large crowds include feelings of restlessness, nervousness, and unease. Understanding your triggers is a great first step to managing anxiety in large crowds. This means recognising the things that cause feelings of anxiety.

When a person has an overactive nervous system, they become sensitive to stimulation and may become overwhelmed easily. Crowded rooms, public spaces, or even gatherings with friends can be highly stimulating. Our brains are processing information from the noise of crowds or from the conversations we are engaging in. We may begin to feel anxiety as our threshold for stimulation is maxed out due to feeling on high-alert constantly. Trauma can cause us to feel edgy and overstimulated in social or public situations. Adding an amount of extra sensory input from the environment can be too much. Shy people tend to be uncomfortable in crowds or in opening up to others. People dealing with social anxiety may appear somewhat shy or introverted.
