Many breeders recommend that your first dog be at least one-to-two-years old before you add a second to the family. If you have an old dog, they may not be physically able to play with or tolerate a pup. It’s often more than twice as difficult for one person to train two young dogs at the same time. Young dogs may also bond to each other and be less likely to create as strong a bond with you. What’s the age of your current dog?

I was always a great believer in small age gaps, so that there is a closer bond and more playtime. My conclusion is that 18 months to 2 years is too small a gap. Four years now seems about right. I have lots of friends with various dogs and they seem to agree, on the whole. There are three and a half to four years between Sunny and Luna, Luna and Busy, and Busy and Ounce.

I currently have a field bred golden who is 7 months. I eventually want to get a second golden and am wondering if anyone has advise on how old my current golden should be when we add our second one. I just don’t want to add our second when our first is too young. Edit: I should have added I want to wait until she is at least two.

The best age gap to have between dogs is something that has been talked about before. I have two years and two months between Murphy and Amber and its worked out brilliantly. I was going to wait until Amber was 18 months to get a third dog, but now think I will wait until she's two. Although she's really sensible and so well behaved I just can't bring myself to make her share my attention so soon. I'm sure she'd love an energetic young playmate but I just want my bond with her to grow even more first.

Through that question I learned about littermate syndrome and realized getting two pups in quick succession isn't the best idea. But I don't want to cause the littermate syndrome even with another dog, so what age do you think is good to introduce another puppy. Stella is currently 4 months and has been an only child here for 2 months on the 13th. Should we just give it a go now or wait another month or two, or even more.
