No matter the reason why your furry family member was not socialized as a puppy, it doesn’t mean they can’t learn how to behave around others and gain BFFFs. Here are some tips for socializing an adult dog. Take your dog for frequent walks, daily walks are great opportunities to expose your dog to new sights, sounds, smells, humans, and animals. When socializing an older dog, the key to success is repetition and consistency. Be patient and don’t get discouraged if they don’t catch on right away, as it can take a much longer time for older dogs to adapt to new situations and environments. With each new experience, be sure to create a calm, loving environment with lots of positive reinforcement, and you will have a happy, confident, and well-balanced dog in no time. Turn to professionals If your dog is not responding well to your methods, contact a professional trainer or consider taking them to a doggie daycare setting like Dogtopia.

Socializing an older dog is much like training a younger dog, but usually with more patience and encouragement required. One of the most important things to remember is to go at your dog’s pace. You will find you’re most successful when you don’t overwhelm your pet with an overload of training or try to move too quickly. Always stay positive. A great next step in socializing your adult dog is to introduce them to another adult dog. Make sure the new dog you’re meeting is not suffering from lack of socialization, fear, aggressiveness, etc. Plan to meet at one of your houses in a fenced backyard or go for a walk together in a familiar place. Keep both dogs on a leash when they meet, to ensure you have control in case the meeting doesn't go well. Reward your dog for positive interactions with their new furry friend. It’s never too late to socialize an adult dog. The most important things to remember are to go at your dog’s pace and keep things positive.

Is it possible to socialize an adult dog.
I’ve got an almost year old GSD mix.
I’ve only had him for about a month but he’s definitely got some stranger danger.
No aggression that I’ve seen yet but he does bark and the hair on his back stands up if new people get too close or come in the house and he definitely does not want to be pet.
I am working with a trainer (our first appt. is in a few days) but I was wondering if it is possible (with lots of work of course) to turn him into a more people friendly dog?
One that could at least meet new people in an appropriate manner?
Are there any success stories out there?
