The pet may be either excited or subdued. Rapid heart rate. Pulse not difficult to find. Gums may be normal (pink) or pale. Gums are extremely pale or show a bluish discoloration. Heart rate is probably elevated and irregular but may be normal or below normal as heart muscle begins to fail. The pulse will be weak and either difficult or impossible to locate. The pet will feel cold to the touch, and rectal temperature will be below normal. The eyes may take on a glazed appearance and appear not to focus normally. Mental condition deteriorates from depression to stupor to coma.

Discolored mucous membranes may tell you that your dog’s body is in shock. Mucous membranes are almost always pink or red on a dog, but they may become very pale, white, blue, or gray when your dog is in shock. Weakness is yet another common sign of shock in dogs. If your dog is too weak to stand up or hold his head up unassisted, this means they need to see an emergency vet immediately. Rapid, shallow breathing can be an indicator of shock in dogs. A faint heartbeat may signify shock, especially immediately following an injury. Shock Can Make a Dog Cold to the Touch. If your pet is cold to the touch, this likely means his body temperature has dropped. Vomiting is Sometimes a Symptom of Shock in Dogs. Pets in shock do not always vomit. However, if your pet is exhibiting any of the other signs on this list, accompanied by vomiting, they should be seen immediately.

If the cause of the shock is vomiting and diarrhea, the veterinarian will first do fungal, viral, and bacterial culture tests to try to find the cause. Further tests will include blood work (i.e. blood count, blood gas, chemistry panel), urinalysis, electrocardiogram (ECG), and radiographs (x-rays). Depending on the results of these tests, the veterinarian may want to do further testing which may include an MRI, CT scan, and ultrasound to try to find the cause of the internal bleeding. If these tests are inconclusive and your dog is still showing signs of shock, the veterinarian may admit your dog to the hospital for continued IV fluids and observation. A comprehensive physical examination will also be done, including your dog’s weight, body temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate.

Signs and Symptoms of Shock Initially: Rapid pulse Pale, cold and clammy As shock develops: Grey-blue skin colour and blue tinge to the mucous membranes they are cyanosed Weak and dizzy Nausea and vomiting Thirst Shallow, rapid breathing As the brain is struggling for oxygen: May become restless and possibly aggressive Yawning and gasping for air Eventually they will lose consciousness and become unresponsive Finally, they will stop breathing. The body’s response to this is to shut down the circulation to the skin, the heart speeds up as it tries to get sufficient blood supply and oxygen around the body and blood supply is drawn away from the gut to prioritise vital organs; which causes the animal to feel sick and thirsty and can lead to collapse. Shock results from major drop in blood pressure and is serious.
