They trust you. When dogs lie on their side, it exposes their chest and stomach, which are vulnerable areas. If your dog does this, it means they trust you. And, if they keep their bum toward your face, it shows that you make them feel safe. They want to protect you, which is why they plant their rumps where they do. This allows them to monitor the entire room and be ready for action if it’s warranted. In many instances, the answers to our questions about why dogs do what they do can be pretty obvious. In this case, answering why your dog sleeps with their back to you may be as simple as that’s how they’re most comfortable. It may also be a sign that your dog feels completely relaxed around you. Don’t ignore the signs with your dog, for the most part, it’s generally not a big deal when dogs sleep with their bums facing you. In fact, you could take it as a compliment, as this could be your pup’s way of showing love and affection.

Dogs are pack animals, and we are their pack. Canine companions that follow their humans everywhere are often referred to as “Velcro dogs” because of their desire to be attached to your side. Young puppies anywhere from birth to 6 months of age can often imprint on their owners and look to them as they would their mother. Another reason your dog might stay close to your side is positive reinforcement. If every time you are with your dog, he gets affection or treats, he’s likely to follow you around more often. If you’re flattered by this affection, and reward your dog for being clingy, you’re sending them a message that the behavior is welcome. Look at it from the dog’s point of view, you might think you’re the cool one, but the person your dog is attached to is the road to everything wonderful and magical. The focus is on that person because of what they give access to. A dog’s life experience before entering your home can play a big part when it comes to being fixated on one person, especially for dogs who have been rescued. Those previous experiences have an impact on a dog and can contribute to the lingering fear of abandonment. It’s not uncommon for certain breeds to over-attach to their owners, this includes dogs in the Working Group or Herding Group that are bred to work side-by-side with humans.

My friends say it's because she loves me but part of me feels like she wants something. She gets enough food and is taken out many times. If it's attention, I give that to her as well but not enough to make her think that my workbench is a petting zone. Why does my dog follow me around ALL DAY? I work from home in my workshop and she follows me everywhere I go. If I'm standing at the workbench, she sits behind or beside me and if I have to step over to a tool 2 feet away, she gets up and follows me. At the end of the day, when I go to my couch to relax, she goes into her crate and falls asleep.
