Our canine friends are well-known for the strong emotional bonds they develop with their humans. Dogs who have a strong emotional attachment to their humans display it in a variety of subtle – and not-so-subtle – ways. If you recognize any of the following emotional attachment indicators in your dog, it’s a sure sign that they’ve formed a deep emotional connection with you. A telltale sign that your dog is emotionally attached to you is if they want to join you for every part of your daily routine. An emotionally attached dog will follow their human around the house from the moment they wake up, making sure that they are always within sight. They can pick up on feelings of anxiety or sadness and will try to provide comfort by nuzzling or licking your face. Dogs that are emotionally attached to their owners tend to maintain eye contact, looking at them with soft, relaxed eyes. Eye contact releases oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone," in both dogs and humans which helps to further foster a sense of connection and affection between pet and pet parent.

There are many dogs that become over attached to their human companions. Sometimes the attachment is to all members of the family, but some dogs become over attached to just one person and can become extremely anxious and distressed when that person is absent, even if there is another person in the house, just like Heidi. Certain breeds tend to become over attached, but some dogs become over attached via experience. Over attachment can be taught by owners, constantly cuddling, talking to and stroking their dog can make the dog become a Velcro dog: needing to be close to their owner, always. Although some dogs appear to be very clingy to their owner, not all of them become distressed when their owner is absent, however, other dogs can become very stressed and anxious or extremely frustrated when their owner is not present.

Dogs are pack animals, and we are their pack. Canine companions that follow their humans everywhere are often referred to as “Velcro dogs” because of their desire to be attached to your side. Young puppies anywhere from birth to 6 months of age can often imprint on their owners and look to them as they would their mother. If every time you are with your dog, he gets affection or treats, he’s likely to follow you around more often. If you’re flattered by this affection, and reward your dog for being clingy, you’re sending them a message that the behavior is welcome. A dog’s life experience before entering your home can play a big part when it comes to being fixated on one person, especially for dogs who have been rescued. Those previous experiences have an impact on a dog and can contribute to the lingering fear of abandonment. If your dog is overly attached, it’s important to figure out whether this behavior is part of their personality and breeding, or if something more serious is going on. A dog that suddenly becomes very clingy may be suffering from a physical ailment and keeping you in reach for comfort.
