What does it mean when my dog won't leave my side?

He won't leave my side. No matter what I am doing, he insists on being near me. If I am in the kitchen, he is standing between me and the counter. If I go to the bathroom and don't close the door completely he puts his nose in through the crack in the door (but doesn't push it open) and stands there. When I am sitting on the couch he is content to chew a bone or whatever but as soon as I stand up he is at attention. I love him but don't want him to feel like his life revolves around me completely. Or is this just what it's like to be a dog owner. I don't want to create a neurotic dog so that is why I am asking about this now.
