Olive oil, mineral oil or coconut oil—oils are relatively safe to use, and olive oil can kill ear mites by smothering them though it takes many weeks to clear ear mites with this method. However, as before, if your pet has a serious ear infection, she needs proper medication to resolve the infection. Oils may also leave the fur around the ears greasy and any of these home remedies could be potentially harmful if your pet’s ear drum is ruptured. That brown waxy debris in the ear is more commonly associated with yeast or sometimes bacteria in the ear canal. In general, home remedies for cleaning ears are relatively safe; however, it is best to stick with commercial ear cleaning solutions which are designed to break up wax and evaporate from the ear canal to leave it dry. Make sure to seek veterinary care for your pet if she has signs of an ear infection or if home remedies do not help within 2-3 days.

Olive oil can be used to help clean a dog's ears and may help with dog ear infections by loosening wax and debris, but it is not a substitute for proper ear cleaners and drops. Whilst there isn’t any harm in using olive oil, it’s a messy option and tends to be more difficult to apply than a dog-safe ear cleaner. You will need more equipment like syringes or an ear dropper, and the oil needs to be warmed to your dog’s body temperature. Can I use olive oil to clean my dog’s ears? Clean your dog’s ears first, and then apply the medicated drops approximately 15 minutes later. No – dog ears are very sensitive so only ever use a dog-safe ear cleaner. Will cleaning my dog’s ears get rid of ear mites? Cleaning your dog’s ears will help to remove some ear mites, but they will need medication to get rid of them completely. My dog has been prescribed ear cleaner and drops – which way round do I apply them?

Never put olive oil, vinegar, shampoo, or any other substance in a dog’s ear. If your dog has very red, itchy, inflamed, and painful ears, see your Vet before you start cleaning. It is quite likely your dog has an ear infection, so ear cleaning will not do much good at this point. If your dog has an infection severe enough to damage the eardrum, some ear cleaners can damage the ear further. Remember if you see lots of redness, the ears are particularly smelly or they are painful, see your Vet. Your pet most likely has an ear infection and ear cleaning may be too painful and damaging to perform.

Then, squirt some dog ear cleaner into the canal. Remember that the opening to the ear canal is the furthest hole to the outside. If you do not have any dog ear cleaner then use olive oil as this too will help loosen any wax. Having put some cleaner or olive oil into the canal, massage the ear and pinch the canal until you hear a squelching noise. Giving the ears a really thorough clean in this way may in some cases be sufficient to cure a mild ear infection, but if a colony of bacteria or yeast have taken residence in your pets ear canal, you will need treatment to eradicate them. Many ear infections are easy to nip in the bud with antibiotic ointment if caught early, but if left to develop can be stubborn to treat. Your vet can look into the canal with an otoscope to visualize the problem and check that the ear drum has not perforated, and dispense medication that you cannot buy anywhere other than from a vet or with a prescription from a vet.
