A DIY that has come through the channels is using vinegar (white or apple cider) as an ear cleaner to help resolve ear infections or as a regular cleaner. Commercial ear cleaners have several properties built in to help reduce debris and moisture in the ears, and are safe when directed by your veterinarian. Commercial ear cleaners are designed to clean the ear and dry any excess moisture from the ear canal. Vinegar (with or without water) as an ear cleaner prevents the ear from actually drying by adding moisture to the ear, creating a perfect environment for bacteria or yeast to multiply. Many problems can come from such a simple ingredient. Before putting anything in your dog’s ear, make sure their ear drum is healthy. Your veterinarian should perform an exam with an ‘otoscope’ to see inside the ear and visualize the ear drum. If the ear drum is damaged there is a very small list of medications that can be used without causing more problems.

There are various types of ear cleaners, but the most important thing is that you only use a good quality dog ear cleaner. Never put olive oil, vinegar, shampoo, or any other substance in a dog’s ear. The key with ear cleaning is to use a large amount of ear cleaner. As the ear canals are quite long, the wiping step is not to get all the ear discharge out. The idea is that when you massage, you will be breaking up the discharge lining the inside of the ear canal so that it forms a solution with the ear cleaner. Gently hold the flap of the ear upright and fill the ear canal with ear cleaner. Direct the tube vertically downwards.

You will need more equipment like syringes or an ear dropper, and the oil needs to be warmed to your dog’s body temperature. Whilst there isn’t any harm in using olive oil, it’s a messy option and tends to be more difficult to apply than a dog-safe ear cleaner. No – dog ears are very sensitive so only ever use a dog-safe ear cleaner.

For normal weekly cleaning, a homemade mixture can be created with 1/3 apple organic cider vinegar and 2/3 water. Using a dropper, gently flush the ear canal with between 1 and 5 ml of the solution. If you can see a build-up of oil or wax inside the ear, try using an Almond Oil dog ear cleaning solution. Pour a small amount of almond oil into a cup or glass and slowly drop about ½ teaspoon of almond oil into your dog’s ear canal using a plastic or glass dropper. Allow the oil to run down ear canal for 5 seconds. Gently massage the ear canal with your thumb and forefinger. Use a soft cloth, tissue or special ear cleaning pad to remove the excess oil. The above vinegar rinse is also good to use after swimming.
