If your dog has a temperature of 39.5°C(103°F) or higher they are considered to have a fever, and in this case, you should call your vet for advice. Fever is an important component of the immune response and can increase the activity of the body’s white blood cells, which helps to fight off invading bacteria and viruses. But fever can also lead to loss of energy, lack of appetite and dehydration and if your dog’s temperature reaches above 41.1°C (106°F) it could be fatal. You should never give your dog paracetamol to treat a fever or any other condition unless instructed by a vet. Paracetamol can be highly toxic to dogs if they are given the wrong amount. Many human medications are toxic to pets, therefore only give your dog medication that your vet has told you to, making sure you give the correct dosage. If your dog’s behaviour has changed, for example they have stopped eating or drinking, become lethargic, started doing the toilet more or less than usual or started showing signs of pain, distress or discomfort this is a more clear indicator that they are unwell and need veterinary care. However, you know your dog best and if you are concerned about their wellbeing for any reason it’s always best to call a vet for advice.

If you are seeing any of the above symptoms or think your dog may have a temperature, it is best to take them to the vet. They can take your dog’s temperature, look at any other symptoms and suggest any treatment if necessary. When humans suffer from a temperature, we may combat it with some paracetamol or ibuprofen. However, this should not be administered to your dog as you should only give medication that has been prescribed by your vet.

If your dog has a fever, 103 F or more, you can help to cool your dog’s body temperature by applying cool water with a soaked towel or cloth to your dog's ears and paws, and run a fan near your dog. Stop applying the water when your dog’s temperature drops below 103 F. Continue to monitor your dog closely to ensure that the fever doesn’t return. Try to coax your dog to drink small amounts of water in order to keep them hydrated, but don’t force your dog to drink. If your dog’s fever is 106 F or higher they need to see a vet immediately. Contact the emergency veterinarian nearest you right away.

Unfortunately, there isn’t an at-home treatment for dogs or a way to reduce your dog’s fever at home. It’s extremely important to never give your dog over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen or Tylenol, to reduce their fever. These medications are toxic to pets and can result in serious harm or death. If your dog has a fever above 102.5 F, that warrants a visit to the veterinarian. Getting a diagnosis for your dog’s fever as soon as possible and beginning treatment will usually result in more favorable outcomes. Most causes of fever can be treated if caught early. Can dogs recover from fever on their own, it can be possible for dogs to recover from fevers without medical intervention especially if no additional symptoms are present.
