You can use coconut oil to condition both your dog’s skin and coat. Apply to your dog’s skin no more than once a week and leave it to absorb for a few minutes before rinsing your dog off. You can also use coconut oil to soften and condition your dog’s paws. During winter, a dog’s paws can become dry and cracked. Rubbing coconut into their paw pads can help to moisturise and improve the condition of their paws. Although there is not much research available on the effects of coconut oil on dogs’ skin, it is well known that coconut oil is good for human’s skin and many people have found that it has the same effects on dogs. Using coconut oil for your dog’s skin may help to relieve dry or itchy skin. To ensure your dog’s wellbeing, the safest advice is to stick to using coconut oil on your dog’s skin, fur and paws and avoid letting them eat it. Choose unrefined, or extra virgin, coconut oils as these are cold pressed from organic coconuts and are usually pure and so less likely to irritate your dog’s skin.

You can let your dog lick the coconut oil straight off of your spoon – some dogs love the taste. Coconut oil is also great to use as a spot treatment for things such as bug bites, hot spots or patches of itchy or dry skin. Apply a small amount to the skin and let it absorb for five minutes. After five minutes, you can rinse your dog with water if needed. If there’s still coconut oil remaining, lightly shampoo and rinse. Make sure to rub the coconut oil thoroughly into your dog’s paws, or your dog will mistake this treatment for a snack and lick off all of the oil! Apply coconut oil to your dog’s skin and coat weekly.

Can You Use Coconut Oil for a Dog’s Skin? Veterinarians typically do not recommend using coconut oil for your dog’s skin because the risk often outweighs the benefits. Coconut oil is often used to hydrate a dog’s skin, reduce inflammation, and provide both antibacterial and antifungal properties. However, this remains anecdotal in dogs. Applying anything to a dog’s skin should be done with caution, as dogs tend to lick themselves often and will ingest the substances. While coconut oil can be ingested, if too much is ingested or it’s in a form that is not meant to be ingested, significant stomach upset and pancreatitis will develop. Coconut oil applied to the skin can also cause an allergic reaction, making any current skin condition or itching worse.

Apply Coconut Oil to Your Dog’s Skin Like with humans, applying coconut oil to your dog's skin can moisturize and prevent flaking, especially in winter. For dogs with dry skin or dandruff, it can increase surface lipid levels. If you live in a wooded area or like to go for hikes with your dog, coconut oil can also serve as a natural way to repel fleas and ticks and keep your pet safe from disease. When applied to your dog’s coat, coconut oil may keep some unwanted pests at bay. Rub a small amount into your hands and massage into your dog's skin and fur. It may also make your dog's coat glossy. Note that your dog might lick themselves more frequently.
