Good rest is important for good health. But an ongoing lack of good, quality rest can actually change the chemical balance in our brains and impact the way we think, feel, and act. When we don’t get a good rest, everything feels more difficult and our thoughts might race. Completing simple tasks can be difficult. Not getting enough sleep can impact our ability to function day to day.

Not getting enough quality sleep regularly raises the risk of many diseases and disorders. These range from heart disease and stroke to obesity and dementia. While you sleep, your brain is working. For example, sleep helps prepare your brain to learn, remember, and create. Everything from blood vessels to the immune system uses sleep as a time for repair, says Dr. Kenneth Wright, Jr., a sleep researcher at the University of Colorado. There are certain repair processes that occur in the body mostly, or most effectively, during sleep, he explains. If you don’t get enough sleep, those processes are going to be disturbed. Sleep helps prepare your brain to learn, remember, and create. The brain has a drainage system that removes toxins during sleep. When we sleep, the brain totally changes function, it becomes almost like a kidney, removing waste from the system.

Quality rest makes it easier to handle your emotions and think clearly. We’re less likely to have big swings in how we feel or lash out if we’re rested. A rested brain is more likely to function better.

If you get tired, learn to rest, not quit. When we’re tired, frustrated, or impatient it’s easier to quit than it is to take a restorative rest. But that’s not how you drive success. Hard work requires energy, and important work requires time. Give yourself rest when you need it so you can stay the course through to completion, no matter how long it takes. If you want to do great work, your body and mind need regular breaks to restore. You need to learn your body’s fatigue cues, and rest. Your prefrontal cortex, most of your brain actually, is a massively energy hungry organ. If you don’t take a regular break, your brain gets foggy and your productivity declines.
