When your dog starts to slow down and show signs of joint stiffness, it can be difficult to know what to do. Should you stop walking them altogether? Many pet parents in this situation begin to walk their dogs less frequently. Unfortunately, this can do a lot more harm than good. Consistent and moderate exercise is best for dogs of all ages. For older dogs, though, it becomes essential. Signs to ease up and slow down include your dog seeming exhausted after a walk, instead of moderately fatigued but happy, they no longer seem enthusiastic about going for walks in the first place, they noticeably lose energy and enthusiasm part of the way through, they seem especially lethargic for an extended period afterwards, or they become irritable during, or immediately after, walks. If you notice these signs, you should think about shortening your older dog’s walks, or easing up the pace. Pay attention to the signals your senior dog is giving you, if he seems very tired after his daily walks, try out a shorter route.

You may need to adapt your exercise routine to fit with what your dog needs and can handle. Look at taking shorter but more frequent walks throughout the day instead of a single long walk. Ensure you give your dog plenty of breaks during the walk so they can rest if needed. You can also speak to your vet for advice on the best exercise routine for your dog as they get older. Physical changes in senior dogs include changes in mobility, or slowing down, struggling with stairs or being less keen on jumping up. If your dog is struggling to get up or down the stairs without your help, it may be a good idea to block the stairs off with a baby gate so that they don’t injure themselves. Whatever their age, you should always speak to your vet if you notice any changes in your dog or have any other concerns about their health.

When walking senior dogs, consider these points: Arthritis and joint problems frequently affect the aging dog. If your dog is having mobility issues due to pain, or discomfort, your vet may be able to provide treatment. It is far better to provide the dog with shorter walks, several times per day, rather than one very long walk. Older dogs are much more susceptible to the effects of high-impact exercise, particularly over longer periods. No dog should be walked when summer temperatures reach balmy heights, however, old dogs are far more susceptible to heat exhaustion and this can be very dangerous. Always time walks to coincide with the cool of the morning, or evening. It is sadly common to see people walking very elderly and infirm dogs, that struggle to keep up. It takes just a little common-sense and empathy to help ensure the senior dog retains a good quality of life.

Avoid extremes – extreme length, extreme intensity, extreme terrain, extreme weathers and temperature, you get the idea. Bear this in mind when deciding on the length and terrain of the route. As many as 4 out of 5 dogs over the age of 8 years old suffer from osteoarthritis. If they are in pain, keeping boredom at bay can be an excellent way to distract them from that pain, obviously also discuss using pain medication with your vet. If your dog is really struggling, or recovering from an injury, then why not go for a stroll in a doggy pushchair. It will still give your dog a chance to experience some new sights and smells and keep their mind active. Find walks with nice gentle terrain – soil, grass, sand – and avoid steep inclines or steps that they may have to jump up or down from.
