Although popping an AirTag on a collar seems like a simple preventative measure that could offer pet owners peace of mind, but it's not without its limitations and risks. If AirTags are attached to a pet's collars, there's a chance it could lead to a medical emergency, said Dr. Shannon Vawter, medical director and veterinarian at Thrive Pet Healthcare Wedgewood in Nashville, Tennessee. There's a battery in there, and if the dog or cat ingests this -- which there's several articles and reports in our veterinary magazines where people have cited that this has happened -- then we have to do a surgery called a gastronomy or an enterotomy and go fish that tag out. Tracking limitations are another reason experts caution against them. An AirTag has very limited tracking capabilities and accuracy in rural areas, the exact place that you're likely to need it the most. This is especially problematic if you're trying to track a dog that has wandered far away from populated areas.
Experts advise against using AirTags to track pets.
AirTags are great for your keys and other personal belongings, but there are safer and more foolproof ways to track your pets. Make sure your dog is microchipped. But also, if you're worried about your dog escaping, just get a GPS. The peace of mind is worth its weight in gold.

We just moved and Barkley keeps escaping to explore the new neighborhood. This tag brings me peace of mind just in case. Just received sadies tag today. I feel a little better knowing she's got this so if she gets out that she has a good chance of making it back home. So far so good, easy to set up and activate the tag, £2.95 is not a massive amount per month to keep pet monitored, and replacement tags a big plus as my cat tends to lose his collars. Easy order, managed to get the free one just paying shipping. Really easy to set up and yes you have a monthly subscription at less than a cup of Starbucks coffee a month.

The short answer is yes, AirTags work on pets — even though Apple doesn’t endorse it.
In fact, the company has said explicitly and publicly that AirTags should not be used to track people or pets.
However, Apple probably said this to protect the company from potential legal action because it’s totally possible to put an AirTag collar on your pet.
An AirTag plus a dog collar is much more affordable than GPS collars for dogs and cats, which cost hundreds of dollars.
The AirTag is lightweight and water resistant, so it is comfortable and durable for your dog to wear.
AirTags are great for finding pets, especially cats, who tend to hide within the house.
An AirTag might be a viable and affordable option for tracking lost pets if you live in a populated area with good cell coverage where lots of people own iPhones.
However, if you live in a more remote area with bad cell coverage and/or not a lot of people around, it might be worth it to invest in a GPS collar that doesn’t rely on other people’s phones to work.
If you don’t choose the right AirTag collar for your pet, they can remove it or damage it, thereby defeating the entire point of wearing an AirTag.

The Crumb Smart Tag is an aluminium tag about the size of a pound coin which features a QR code which can be scanned by anyone with a smartphone should you lose your pet. If the tag is scanned then the person scanning can choose to share their location and you will receive their GPS co-ordinates instantly making getting your pet back much easier. We tested this functionality and it worked perfectly - the person scanning the tag doesn't have to download an app, they are simply directed to a website and given the option to share their location. When the location was shared we received a text message almost instantly with a highly accurate location. If you are unlucky enough to lose your pet then Crumb will notify every vet, pet shelter and Crumb user within a 15 mile radius and if they find your pet they can notify you instantly via your pet's profile. Another interesting feature for dog owners is what they call 'Snout ID', a dog's nose print is as unique as a human fingerprint so Crumb allow you to add a photo of your dog's nose which they turn into a biometric fingerprint which is then stored in their database. If your dog is stolen and it's tag removed then any potential purchaser could scan your dog's nose and you would be notified and sent their location. Worn in addition to a traditional tag it is, however, an excellent product with many advantages over a traditional tag.

When a pet wearing a Crumb smart tag goes missing, alerts are immediately sent to every vet and rescue centre within 10 miles.
This is done in case your pet slips their collar or somehow loses their tag.
Even in the worst case scenario, every local vet and rescue center will know about your missing pet, just as if they scanned the tag.
According to their website, the tags have helped reunite over 3,000 pets in the U.K.
There’s no doubt in my mind that they’ve saved lives too.
Vets are calling the free tags “legitimately lifesaving”.
It was a FULL pet profile, including: Her name, breed and age Contact info for both owners A button to share her exact location with her owner Behaviour notes Medical and allergy information
This was potentially life-saving.
The medication she’s currently on – most likely to fight an infection We knew she was on Gentamicin & Tetracycline, so we knew to avoid certain other treatments.
And most importantly, we knew exactly who to call, so we could get her home as soon as possible.
If it isn’t obvious already – this was a game changer.
