Always be sure to take along plenty of water for the both of you when you go out for a long hike, walk or run with your dog. Stop for water breaks, maybe around every mile or when you see that your dog is panting hard, allowing your dog to drink just enough to quench her thirst each time. Don’t allow her to gulp large amounts of water at one time, as this can lead stomach upset or bloating. You can also use a bottle with a pop-up spout, so that you can control the amount of water your dog is drinking. One of the more practical products available for dogs is a water bottle cap that releases small amounts of water when the dog licks the roller ball in the spout. After a period of cooling down and rehydrating with water -- small amounts at a time so he doesn’t gulp too much down -- feed your dog her normal meal.

If your dog has had a negative experience with water in the past, such as having their tail stepped on whilst they were drinking, they may develop a negative association with drinking from their bowl. Fear or negative experiences can lead to issues with drinking. Sometimes if your dog feels sick, they may not want to drink. Nausea can also cause dogs to drink excessively and then vomit. If your dog’s constantly refusing to drink, err on the side of caution and consult a vet. Keep an eye on your dog’s water consumption and if you think they are drinking too little or too much it’s important to consult your vet. However, it’s incredibly important to never restrict your dog’s water intake as it may make certain conditions worse. Instead, take your dog to the vet for diagnosis.

Your dog should always have access to water. But the amount of water they should drink daily depends on their age, size, activity level, diet, medical conditions and treatments. If you notice your pup drinking more in situations they’re unsure about, it could be their way of taking a break from things. You should never force your dog to drink water. But some things that might encourage your pooch to drink a good amount include keeping their water fresh, and their bowl clean, leaving water in different locations, using different bowls. Make sure your pooch always has access to fresh and clean water, but speak to your vet if you’re worried they’re dehydrated or show any signs of dehydration.

Your dog is unlikely to voluntarily drink enough water from their bowl to cause water intoxication, so you shouldn’t restrict their water. However, how much water is too much is difficult to define as it depends on many factors. Limit the time a dog spends in water to prevent them from swallowing too much. Give them time to rest with regular breaks to allow the body’s natural fluid balancing system time to manage any excess intake. Never leave your dog unsupervised when in water. Don’t restrict your dog from drinking water from their bowl. If your dog is drinking excessively, contact your vet for advice.
