The simple answer is, no. If your gums are damaged by, for example periodontitis, the most severe form of gum disease, it’s not possible for receding gums to grow back. However, even though receding gums can’t be reversed there are treatments that can help to stop the problem from getting worse. Scaling and root planing is often enough to fix the problem, but you will need to have regular check ups to make sure your receding gums have improved and are not getting worse. It’s also important to maintain a good oral health routine to protect your gums. For more severe cases of receding gums your dentist may recommend gum surgery. There are few different types including: Open flap scaling and planing, Regeneration, and GUM GRAFTS.

You can’t fix periodontitis with brushing and flossing alone. You’ll need a dentist to help you. At Cleveland Clinic, we have expert knowledge when it comes to slowing and reversing gum disease. We’ll craft a treatment plan that focuses on you and your needs. Treatment can get rid of the infection and set you on the path to better oral health.

Gum disease isn’t curable, but it’s manageable with appropriate treatment. You can’t cure it because once you lose structural support around your teeth, you don’t usually get all of it back. However, periodontal treatment can reduce infection and rebuild your bone and tissue to some degree. One stage of gum disease is totally reversible — gingivitis (very early periodontal disease). If you detect gingivitis early enough, you can reverse it with regular dental cleaning and diligent oral hygiene. People who have very early periodontal disease (gingivitis) may be able to reverse the condition with routine dental cleaning and improved oral hygiene. Because there’s no bone loss yet, this conservative approach gets rid of harmful oral bacteria before the disease has a chance to progress.

How gum disease is treated depends on how severe it is. In the early stages, your dentist will give you advice about keeping your teeth clean, such as using interdental brushes, advise you to stop smoking, if you smoke, advise you to get your teeth cleaned by a hygienist. If your gum disease is serious, you may need to have deep cleaning under the gums, antibiotics, to have some teeth removed, gum surgery. Your dentist will check your teeth and gums, and may take some X-rays to check your teeth and jaw bone. They may also refer you to a specialist for further tests and treatment. Gum disease can lead to bad breath and a bad taste in the mouth, your gums shrinking, your teeth becoming loose or falling out.
You should have regular dental check-ups even if you do not have any problems. See a dentist if you have not had a check-up for 2 years (or 1 year if you're under 18). Do brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day – spit after brushing, do not rinse, clean in between your teeth every day using floss or interdental brushes, replace your toothbrush every 1 to 3 months, see a dentist and dental hygienist for regular check-ups, especially if you're pregnant or have type 2 diabetes.
