My skin will get inflamed when my dog licks me. Not terrible - mostly just redness and some mild itchiness. Doesn't happen with his fur/coat/whatever, just him licking. I've never been allergic to anything, so this is a bit of a new territory for me. Might bring it up with my GP next thing I'm in for something, but I'm guessing he'll only suggest some antihistamines.

Generally, for peanut allergic people, if the dog has eaten peanut butter and licked you, you could get a skin reaction where the dog has licked you. Dog allergens are present in the skin, hair, saliva and sebaceous glands. Dog allergies can cause symptoms such as itchy watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, hives and an asthma flare in people who have asthma. For a person with food allergies, touching these allergens can lead to hives, but contact with the mouth (as in a dog lick on the face) may cause a serious reaction. People with dog allergies can develop symptoms when they are around the dog, even without touching the dog, as some of the allergens can be airborne. Food allergies can cause a range of symptoms, some of which overlap with the symptoms of dog allergies.

If you are thinking of getting a dog, or want to work with dogs, it’s important to check that you are not allergic to them. Many people believe that if they have allergies to pets, it’s the fur that’s the problem, however, the body’s allergic responses are directed toward proteins found in a dog’s skin fakes, urine, blood, and saliva. Dog saliva has even more protein profiles than a dog’s skin, so it will trigger the immune system and cause more allergies. Therefore, if you are allergic to the proteins in a dog’s saliva and a dog licks you, your immune system will activate and attack the proteins in the saliva, just as it would if it were a virus or bacteria. This will result in an allergic reaction which could include an outbreak of hives or a rash. Symptoms of dog allergies can include watery, swollen eyes, a runny nose, itchy or irritated skin, or puffiness around the face. Allergic reactions can range from mild symptoms to much more severe depending on the person.

If your skin ever started itching or you developed a rash after getting licked by a dog, you might wonder if you could be allergic to dog saliva. The simple answer is yes, you can be allergic to a dog’s saliva. Dog saliva has multiple protein profiles that may trigger your immune system. In fact, a dog’s saliva has more protein types than their skin, so it can potentially cause more allergies than dander. If you’re allergic to the proteins in a dog’s saliva and the dog licks you, your immune system will activate and attack the proteins in the saliva just as if they were a virus or bacteria on the skin. This can result in a rash or hives, and your skin can become itchy, red, and/or swollen. Can You Be Allergic to Just Certain Dogs' Saliva, yes, dogs can have different protein profiles, so you can be allergic to saliva from other people’s dogs even if you are not allergic to your own dog’s saliva.

When dog saliva touches intact human skin, especially in a healthy person, it is extremely unlikely to cause any problems, as there will be very little absorption through the skin. However, a dog’s saliva and whatever might be in it can be absorbed more easily through the mucous membranes of a person’s nose, mouth, and eyes, as well as any cuts or wounds. If a dog licks your face and the skin there becomes red and inflamed within minutes, that's a good indication that you have an allergy. Dog saliva contains glycoprotein, a substance that triggers the body's defense mechanism in some people. You could get a parasite, such as hookworm and roundworm, which can cause skin rashes and itchiness. If you have either of these parasites, you might notice skin rashes and itchiness. Dogs can also pass on ringworm, a fungal infection which creates a rash on the skin.
