Can you build up a tolerance to dog allergies?

I'm allergic to animal dander. Any time I encounter a pet I'll get the typical allergy symptoms such as itchiness, stuffy nose, and sneezing. However, I don't get allergies with my own dogs and cats. When I get a new pet I initially get allergies, but it eventually stops. Is it a thing to develop a tolerance to your own pets?

Arguably the biggest benefit for animal lovers is that by treating the cause of your cat allergy, you’re building tolerance to not only your cat, but other cats too. The same goes for allergies to dogs, horses, or other furry friends that are treatable with immunotherapy. Immunotherapy works by slowly introducing your body to your offending allergens. Over time, doses increase until tolerance is built, usually taking three to five years. When you treat the cause of your allergy, your body is trained to not react to pet dander, so the results can be long-lasting. Typically, treatment takes 3-5 years to complete – a short-term cost for long-lasting results. Provides broad tolerance.

Unfortunately, given current technology, it’s not possible to build up an absolute immunity to dog allergies.
But immunotherapy is a long-term solution that is viable for some people to pursue.
Immunotherapy is a process where a trained medical professional gradually exposes your body to the allergy-causing protein, either by injection or by swallowing a pill.
Immunotherapy intends to tell your immune system to stop overreacting when you come into contact with the proteins.
However, immunotherapy is not for everyone.
It’s not guaranteed to work for every case, typically takes a very long time for the immune system to adjust, and is not always affordable.
