I heard you shouldn’t make dogs wait over 8 hours to go potty.
How long can adult dogs hold it overnight?
I take my dog out at around 10 pm.
She doesn’t eat or drink anything afterwards but lays in bed with me while I’m still on my phone.
She won’t fall asleep unless I do and I go to bed at around 11ish to 12 am.
I usually fall back asleep and don’t get up until 8-9 am to take her out.

While most dogs can hold their urine for 8 to 10 hours, exceeding this time frame can potentially lead to health issues. If your dog has not urinated for more than 12 hours, it’s crucial to contact your veterinarian. This could be a sign of a more serious underlying condition that requires immediate attention. Generally, a healthy dog will pee anywhere from three to five times a day. However, puppies or older dogs might need to go more frequently due to less control over their bladder muscles. When a dog holds their urine for too long, several health issues can arise. The most common risk is a urinary tract infection (UTI), which can cause discomfort and lead to more severe complications if left untreated. Holding urine can also lead to the formation of bladder stones or even cause the bladder to burst in extreme cases, which is a life-threatening emergency.

Dogs can only be relied on to hold their urine or feces one hour for every month old they are, until 8 hours at 8 months old. No dog of any age should be made to wait longer than 8 hours. Dogs can go for 8 to 10 hours without urinating overnight, while sleeping. However, all dogs need to be taken out after a meal or a drink, upon waking up and after a period of play. A two month old puppy can hold his bladder for up to 3 hours. Time increases an hour per month of age. At 6 months of age he will be able to hold his bladder for 7-8 hours. Different breeds have different social needs: hounds are extremely social, but some working breeds and guard dogs are fine for 10-12 hours.
