There are, thankfully, solutions at hand for owners to implement on helping their four-legged family members with separation anxiety. A few simple techniques involve slowly phasing in returning to the office, gradually building up time of your pup or dog being left alone, taking them to day care or a trusted person, playing relaxing music if they’re home alone and making sure they are thoroughly exercised before leaving them on their own. Don't be hard on yourself and gradually build up to it. Follow our tips here to help both of you transition into more time apart. If you’re in the position of going back to the office full-time or you’re off to university, don’t despair! We’re here to offer you a much-needed dose of puppy love whilst you’re away from home, through our puppy therapy. This enables you to have all the puppy cuddles you need, whilst being away from your loved ones. If you prepare in advance to make sure your pet will be properly looked after, you can ease separation anxiety on both sides. To ease stress, you need to make the right arrangements for your pet. We all have our safe spaces and the same applies to animals, so try your best to keep pets in their own environment when you go away. This helps keep things as familiar as possible and means your pet doesn’t have to get used to being somewhere unfamiliar, which could stress them out. Have a family member or friend help out, leaving your pet in the care of someone else can make some pet owners anxious, but you can ease your anxiety by leaning on a trusted family member or friend. Ask them if they’re able to spare a few days to stay in your home while you’re away, or whether they’d be able to look after your pet in their own home. Leave clear instructions, include the name, number of your vet and an emergency contact for you, details of your pet's usual routine and the importance of trying to stick to this as much as possible. Give familiar-smelling items – if your pet isn't staying in your home, provide them with something like a blanket or a worn item of your clothing, this’ll help them feel more comfortable.

When a dog doesn’t know how to self-soothe or cope, they may turn to chewing or clawing stuff around the house, or barking or howling. Managing how your dog spends its time alone can help your pup feel more satisfied or fulfilled while you’re away. Some options include: Hire a dog walker, even a day or two per week, Doggy day care, Provide mentally stimulating toys such as treat puzzles, Leave on the TV or radio, Get another pet, Crate train them. Set a routine for your furry best friend that works for you both. Try letting your dog out last thing before you leave for the day and first thing when you get home. If you notice a behavior change in your pet due to being alone too long, it could be a sign to take some action. Working full-time or having a busy life and owning a pet is doable, you may just have to get creative to ensure their needs are being met.
